fischer projections--how to draw

Hi guys,

I know this is a pretty basic question, but my textbook doesn't really go into much detail about this and I'd appreciate some input..

What's the best method to go about drawing a Fischer projection without using models? Obviously, using models, you'd just make the carbon skeleton vertical and rotate all horizontal bonds so that they're coming towards you...

But how do I go from a molecule drawn on a page (with multiple chiral centers) to drawing its Fischer projection without using models?

On the chiral carbons the atom going straight up or down goes on the top or bottom. Atoms going back go on the left and coming out on right.

It's really easy if you go from a Newman to a Fischer.
