I have posted this exact thread 3 times and SDN keeps messing it up and it disappears. What is wrong with SDN today?????

Anyway, I have heard rumors about FAU starting up a med school next year. Any info?

I used to hear those rumors as well. I don't really buy it. The state just gave FSU some insane amount, around $50M, to build their new medical school. The only reason FSU got a medical school in the first place was b/c they have very powerful alumni. I know we got some rich peeps down here in Florida, but I doubt that there's much support for creation of another medical school, even though us applicants wouldn't mind! Perhaps increasing the class size at the existing medical schools is a possibility, but a new one seems unlikely. Unless, of course, you know something I don't know. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

    Foxy,
What FAU has is an alliance with UM that the first two years of medical school is at FAU instead of UM via telecommunications ( or something to that affect.) I believe this is the 2nd year they have done it. I will actually be going to a meeting about it tomorrow. I do know that you have to be an FAU student to qualify. I'll let you know anything else I learn.

I'm sure you'll be in medical school next year anyway, so your questions will be completely irrelevent!!

    Does anyone have info?

  7. Koolguy,

I highly doubt it. Most of the florida's legislature did not want another medical school. It passed anyways because of the powerful alumni that FSU does possess. Still to this day most people feel that FSUCOM was a mistake, but the only thing to do now is to make a strong attempt to get it accredited or the state of florida will look real bad.

So when would FSU's med school be expected to open? Seems like an incredible gift for Floridian pre-meds...

  10. why the no comment Ibis?? please explain yourself....

  11. Jargon,
This year will be the second class of the FSU Med school. Still not accredited yet. But the school has the funding...so the classes go one

The guy I used to room with in florida just started the FAU program last week. We were talking about it, comparing that program to what I'm doing at OSU. If there's anything you wanted to know, just ask.

University of Central Florida also has plans for a med school in the future....I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

ladybug- in the meantime, incoming Honors UCFers now have a 7yr option with USF med school. Same thing they offered the Honors students at USF: finish all your pre-med coursework, honors (general ed) classes and majority of major requirements in 3 yrs, along with getting a 30+ MCAT with no single score <8 and then you're pretty much in..

but if you're gonna do all that, you can pretty much be assured to get in somewhere if you take the extra year (4th yr undergrad) and get a double major or do awesome extra curriculars. Atleast, that's what I opted for. But defintely attractive if you like the idea of saving a year.

No, I just took the MCAT last week, so my file is not complete yet. I am also not sure I did well enough to even obtain an interview. Good luck on yours and let me know how it went. Where are you applying?

I desperately want out of florida (I'm a canadian who actually misses the change of seasons). I'm applying to all the schools in chicago UM as well to increase my chances. I'm also kinda restricted in where I can apply because I'm married with a baby on the way.
