Hi guys...is anyone out there applying to the schools in Florida? Have you heard anything? I applied to UF, UM, & USF. Any comments?

My file was complete in late september at UM (only place I applied) and I have since been put on hold. So what else is new?+pissed+

Did UM send notification when your file was complete? Via snail mail, e-mail, or telephone? Also are you in-state? Also, if you don't mind, what are your stats?

Actually I can't recall whether they sent me anything that indicated my file was complete. Definitely not by email. I know for sure they told me over the phone when I called though. I am in state. I have 3.3 GPA and a 33 MCAT. You can call UM mon-thurs 2-4:30pm at (305) 243-6791. Hope that helps!🙂

I applied to those three schools and I interviewed at USF back in early November. I have not heard from UM or UF as of yet though despite being complete since early October.

Thanks, Jumpu!

As for UF, they sent a letter stating to be very patient....even if your app is completed early, there may not be a response until March. So don't give up hope!

Well it's not really like I've given up hope as it is giving myself a reality check. But thanks for the encouragement anyway.😀

I am an undergrad freshman who just moved away from FL to go to school, but the University of Florida is my #1 choice!! Can anyone whos applied give me some info on your application process, secondaries, interviews, etc? I want to know as much as possible, so I know what I'm in for! 🙂 Thanks!!

hey, i interviewed at UF on 11/15, i had been complete for less than a day when i got the invite.......and then interviewed about 2 weeks later..........usf lost my lors, so i had to resend them, miami said they are reviewing now and will be sending out invites after the holidays.......wait til after the holidays and you should hear something from miami..............dont worry if you interview late at UF, they are semi rolling...............

ai. . .florida is my 'trauma story. . .' i missed my uf interview!!! i missed the plane!!
eek. such a day. such a day.
they rescheduled for january 19, but i know it's pretty much just a courtesy at this point. . .still, i am actually looking forward to just physically going to florida weather, even if for a day. . .🙂

Hey all,
I applied to USF and UF

UF got back to me two days after my app was complete. It was the quickest turnaround I have ever seen on an application. I got the interview in early January.

USF took about two weeks and they needed some prodding. I emailed them, then visited the admissions office to talk to the staff to see if they had seen my app. Once they reviewed my app, they invited me for an interview. I got that interview in early January also.

Though I hate to say this, excellent #'s will definitely expedite getting an interview at both of these schools. I have friends with pretty-good #'s who've applied months ago and have yet to hear from both schools. It's kinda sad.

I have to agree, great numbers will get you an interview at UF and USF rather easily for most people. A 2 day turnaround time at UF kind of proves that since it usually take a while for members of the medical selection committee to look through an entire application and make a decision.

I actually heard back from USF rather quickly, about a week after I was complete there despite having average numbers. Overall, its my top choice. Its in a metropolitan area with some incredible facilities. Also, the faculty and administration are surprisingly supportive towards its students. I was half a vote away from gaining an immediate acceptance by the admissions committee, but that puts me at the top of their waitlist, according to Mr. Larkin the director of admissions. God, I hope I get in.

Lets keep this thread going, I've always wished there was more discussion about the Florida schools.

Hopefully us Miami applicants get an invite after the holidays. I still can't believe that my alma mater has not shown me any love as of yet. 😡

You will definitely get in..and USF is an awesome school. Their matchlist is incredible.

Hey Nero,
I was wondering how did you find out what your total vote count was for USF. I was waitlisted there and Larkin told me I was at the top of the list but did not let me a specific number. Maybe I should call ask?

Florida schools can kiss my a$$. lol Ok so im bitter because I got rejected from my alma mater, UF. And then I have not heard a peep from any other FL schools. Yet I've gotten love from the northeast with 4 interviews. I never actually contacted USF to see if my file was ever complete. 🙁 But honestly, I already know I'm getting a rejection from them because they have minimum cut-offs, which I already don't meet. It's sad that a great institution like Albert Einstein will offer me an interview because they can understand a glitch in my academics, but my own state school (which is no where near as comparable) is gonna give me the boot without even consideration. I wish I woulda known earlier. Oh well. Good luck everyone.

Sorry if you guys answered this, but how does each school notify you that your app is complete. I received a post card from UF, but what about USF & UM. Should I call?

Thats kinda strange, for UF, I actually got an email confirming that my app was complete. For USF, they never really told me my app was complete, I had to keep emailing them. I even visited the admissions office to check up on it a few times.

USF and UM do not send confirmation that your application is complete. You can e-mail USF to find out and call UM to find out.

By the way, Larkin does not tell you your total vote count, but he will tell you where you approximately stand on the waitlist, but probably not until later when the waitlist is more complete. I'm sure I'm not at the top of the waitlist anymore, but I hope I'm somewhere close. I had a friend last year who was ranked in the 40s on the waitlist and got in around May. He interviewed around March I think. Also they accepted around 60 people off the waitlist last year.

MyEyesMesmerize, the only cut off that USF has that I know of a cut off for people who have a score of 7 or below on any section of the MCAT. They don't have a strict GPA cutoff that I know of. You should e-mail USF because its Larkin who actually responds, not some admissions officer, and I think he also screens applications and chooses who they interview. (This is just a guess though because Larkin kind of danced around the question when he was asked if he was the one who chose people for interviews) If you bring your application to his attention and you show the interest he might invite you.

Are there any FSU applicants here?

eh? they have a 3.0 OGPA and SGPA cut off, plus 8's on the MCATs...if you don't have those, then I dont see how einstein (or any other school) gave you love..be happy with the albert love..

actually, 71 people got in off the waitlist...the total acceptance last year was 171 people, out of 325ish interviewed. Usually, however, it's around 60 or so people getting in, but since UF raided the USF waitlist, which makes larkin very happy..hahahahaha...

Thats right, 71 did get in last year off the waitlist at USF, but its usually around 60, so thats pretty much what I'm expecting this year.

Shows how much you know Blitz. I stated what I did because I know of their cut-offs. And yes, even with not meeting one of them, I still got an interview from Einstein and just received one from Rochester. Goes to show that it's not all about the numbers even at top schools. Sorry that you don't see how they did it but they did.

Hey all,
I'm gonna be interviewing at USF in January. Have they already filled up the class or am I competing for spots on the waitlist? What Mr. Larkin told me when I called is that the class is not yet full. But I'm not sure if that'll still be true when January rolls around.

From what I was told the class is usually completely full by Jan, so you will most likely be waitlisted. But you never know miracles can happen.

USF is usually filled up by January and you probably will be waitlisted, but with the way they structure their admissions process and the waitlist, being offered an acceptance from the waitlist is a good possibility. If you get a high number of votes from the 15 member adcom, you'll be placed at the top of the ranked waitlist and probably be offered a spot around Feb./March.

MyEyesMesmerize, you're obviously a great candidate because you got interviews at some really good schools. The problem with Florida is that there really is not that many medical schools and available seats. There's the 3 main ones, UF, USF, and UM, and then there is FSU. USF has a class size of 100, UF has a class size of 96, and FSU has a really small class (40?). UM has about 145. Thats somewhere between 350 and 400 seats available in this state, almost all of which is reserved only for FL residents (UM is the only school that is now trying to reserve 25 spots for out-of-staters: so thats 25 less seats for us Floridians; UF also has accepted out-of-staters, but very few...like 1 per class). Its a really small number compared to the seats available in other states like NY, PA, CA, and OH. That makes it quite competitive for students who are residents in FL seeking to go to a school in the state. Its usually why good numbers are generally required to be invited to interview at these schools. It really is sad, but true.

Would you mind sharing what else you have done in order to make yourself a good candidate aside from your stats? Research, EC's, Graduate work?

UM contacted me 1 mo. after my secondary was complete. i interviewed in early nov. and got accepted 2.5 weeks later. i'm out of state so i'm quite surprised by my acceptance...as far as accepting out of state residents...they're filling their class with approx. 40 out of state residents this year....last year they accepted around 21...
PM me if you have any questions. good luck!

Did they tell you 40 at the interview? 25 is what they stated in a letter I got from them. If thats true, thats even less seats for Florida residents. 🙁

Well I've done pretty much the basic things....undergrad research, grad research, hospital and non-clinical volunteer work, employed in a hospital, tutoring, and leadership in campus organizations. I think that the only thing that truly stands out on my application is my leadership. I've been in a wide variety of organizations and always held leadership positions in them. And they are varied also, student government, social, academic, cultural, and greek. I helped charter a new organization at my graduate school and also helped found an Alumni association for my fraternity. My personal statement kicked ass too. 😀

Honestly though, I think a big factor in admissions is motivation and character. I'm interested in medicine because I have a sincere love for it and I can express that well. Being that I'm the first in my family to even go to college, people can see I have high degree of self-motivation. Things haven't always come easy to me. I've had my share of academic struggles also. But, in the end, I have continued to perservere. Ok well enough of that. Good luck to you all!

According to the rumors going around here at UM, Miami is aiming to accept around 40 out of staters this year.

From what I remember in the Miami Interview, the dean of admissions I believe told us that they are trying to have 40% of the class to be from out of state (not 40 out of state residents). Myabe I'm wrong, but I think that's what he had said.

They said they are trying to go for even more national recognition this year. What was the class size supposed to be anyways? 150 or so?

i remember he said that they're aiming for 40 out of state this year, but over the next couple of years, they're reaching for 40%....

I'm actually surprised that they did not make this transition earlier. They used to be the only private medical school that I knew of that used to accept almost exclusively in state residents. Just two or three years ago, there was only 1 out of state resident that matriculated to Miami.

My theory is that there is now less pressure from the state government for them to accept Florida residents now because of the new state medical school at FSU.

miami's trying to move up from the #50 spot....want to get ahead of uf..........the gov't thing itoo

So, what's the ultimate decision between UF and Miami... what is really better. I realize the differences between the two but is one really better than the other. UF ranks higher, but Miami gets lots more NIH funding. Plus, Miami rocks UFs clinical experience options. Any other imput?

Word to your mother.

I am going to go ahead and apply to FSU because they extended their deadline. The application is a pain and you have to handwrite part of it but it's another school on a list of possibilities.

I have already interviewed at both USF and UF very early in the process and now I am sitting on my hands waiting from decisions or mvmt on a wait list. Miami has not asked me for an interview at all. I have 2 questions however.

1. USF stated 2 different reasons for me being waitlisted: science GPA, Dreaded "W" in molec. Now my science GPA was about 3.4. After this semester I got it up to about 3.55 and I got an A in the molec course which i previously dropped. Larkin from USF has told me that they don't consider the applications again. Should I try to meet with him to ask the committee to reconsider my application given my recent excellent grades and upward trend in my grades. I feel it is warranted but surely that would just piss off the admissions committee. I dunno. Any ideas?

2. USF is my second choice behind UF. I am on the wait till Feb. and then we will tell you list at UF. How do I get off this list and get in? Letter of interest? IF so then what do I say in the letter. I can argue my case as to why I shoud be let in and I can easily tell them why I want to go to school there. Do I write this letter and if so what do I include?

Keeping my fingers crossed on Miami.

The girls and the weather, obviously you have not been to Tampa

I have to agree, Florida is a great state to live in. Gainesville does not get me very excited, but Tampa and Miami are awesome. It would be like going to medical school in paradise...with nice beaches and hot women, plus there are hundreds of things to do around town.

By the way, does anyone know when the UM, UF, and USF stop interviewing?

Last year UM stopped interviewing in mid April, but that was probably due to the AMCAS backup. I would say they will stop interviewing around mid to late March. Try calling to get an exact date.

i just got my invite at UM yesterday through email and the list open interview dates showed Friday March 14 as the last open date. hope this helps.

hey guys....
any news from the florida schools?
none here, but i recommend calling UF for any info needed. they are very nice.

nope, still waiting on usf and um............

from what i've heard usf itnerviews are for the waitlist right now.....and from the above post um interivews are goign to be pretty late.........g.ood luck

 UF is so full of it. The response they're talking about is the mass mailing of pre-interview rejections that they plan on sending out around March 15th. That whole "be very patient" thing is just so you don't call and harass them. Funny how they word it to give applicants false hope.

this is true, they (and USF supposedly) have a very quick turnaround time from file completion to interview invite.....most people i know of got it either that same day or the next day after their file was complete..........

This is true, USF does have a fast turnaround time, I got my invite the day after my file was complete.

What about the people put on hold...what are the chances they will be accepted eventually?

From what i've been told the majority of their class comes from the "hold post-interview" category........they accept a few after each week and put everybody else on hold......By doing the math, however, it doesn't look good, for a class of about 100 if 4 to 5 are accepted every interview week, then it means most of the holds go on waitlist....HOWEVER, THEY CLAIM, that most of their students come from the hold list...........the only way this can be true, is if most of their initial acceptances decide not to attend UF.....i think after last year's fiasco, they are only accpeting people who REALLY REALLY REALLY want to go there........they judge this partly by lookign at how many and where you have applied............that's what killed me, they saw my list and both interviewers commented on it............so i'm not expecting a whole lot from them.....good luck to you though......

I thought that an AMCAS rule was that no medical school can know the schools that you applied via AMCAS because its supposed to be confidential information. A medical school can't base their decisions using factors like how many schools or where else that applicant applied to. If UF is doing that, then there should should be another grievance filed against UF, in addition to the waitlist fiasco from last year. Thats ridiculous. UF has become too arrogant for its own good.

Yeup, its on its secondary, they say list all the medical schools, graduate schools, you applied to.........attach extra sheet if necessary...........lots of people did not attach an extra sheet, but the way you gotta figure it is that they are going to see everything on 4/15 anyway, so they will know............and if you are waitlist then no change you are getting in sicne you lied.......

i'm not too depressed over it, they are very arrogant, including the facutly and students i've met...and i've been to top ten schools and those are the least arrogant people i've met.......and they have the most reason to be.......
