I am currently doing a rotation at a rural FM practice with about 8 docs. The docs own the practice and they have a bunch of staff including PAs, NPs, ultrasound techs, nurses, etc. Across the physicians at this practice there are docs that do colonoscopies, vasectomies, OB, minor surgical procedures, some psych, and some derm (cryotherapy) along with taking care of the typical diabetes, cholesterol, etc. I know that since this place is rural the docs are likely doing more procedures than I would see near a city.

What types of things would I expect to be able to do if I were an FM doc near a mid sized city like Milwaukee?

thank you

Medicine is a business much like any other. As such, your customers need a compelling reason to come to you for whatever service you provide. With rural practice, you may be the only one that can offer a particular service for several hundred miles. When you position yourself close to a major metro area, you are then competing with a slew of specialists for the same services. Again, you've gotta offer something the other guy/gal can't. Convenience? Price?

In all likelihood, a specialist will do more OB/vasectomies/colons in a week than you'll do in a year so tough sell there if you want to be near a metro area. I do a lot of cryo in my office as there's plenty of cryo business to go around, harm risk is very low and it is very convenient to my patients. I'll do some ortho injections and do plenty of diabetes mgt. and psych. I'd expect your clinical day to be similar to mine.
