Follow up on decline/cancellations

Is it necessary to follow up on places you email a cancellation, but they don't acknowledge they have received it? I ask just because I know how BAD it is if you were to just not show up and my concern is if a program didn't cancel me off of its list -- it would instead look like I'm a no show.
