EM Fellowship Program
Are you an Internal Medicine Resident interested in pursuing an EmergencyMedicine Fellowship for 2021-2022?

The demand for emergency physician services will exceed the supply for the foreseeable future, especially in small cities and rural areas. Emergency Medicine residency programs will not overcome the supply deficit. Consequently, alternative pathways for training emergency physicians are needed.
Our organization is committed to serving our patients with compassionate, high-value emergency care. To promote that objective, we have established five EM Fellowship Programs to train physicians who have completed Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Medicine/Pediatrics, or other residency programs, to provide effective and efficient emergency medical care and to become independent emergency department physicians in community hospitals.
Our main training sites are located in Alabama (Decatur, Cullman, Birmingham, and Alabaster) and Louisiana (Monroe). Each site has secondary training hospitals to provide a variety of clinical experiences. A total of 24 fellowship positions are available for the 2021-2022 year. One application prepares the candidate for consideration at all programs.
Please visit our Fellowship Program at emfellows.com to learn more about the program and submit an application.

Application Deadline is August 23, 2020!

... and then be unable to get boarded in emergency medicine.

(edit for clarification: their website says you will be eligible for ABPS certification... that isn't a recognized board. ACEP/AAEM/SAEM/etc/etc/etc don't recognize it... ABEM is the recognized board for emergency medicine and to be eligible for that you have to do an emergency medicine residency).

They never seem to openly advertise that you will never be “real” with these fellowships and their only real benefit is getting more comfortable with some of the EM skills.

Interesting history of EM board certification. Looks like its up to each state to recognize which board is legitimate.

Not really, no. The state as a whole doesn't care (or at least mine doesn't).

It's hospitals and insurance companies who care.

It serves a purpose for some people, I just find the dishonesty unappealing
Well, becoming a doc is like that for the most part. No transparency in many things. They just tell you to shut up because you should be thankful to be part of an "elite" profession

"While state medical boards have been the stage for most certification battles, some of these issues have spilled over into the courts. The New York State Department of Health determined that BCEM certification was not equivalent to certification by ABMS or AOA; thus, BCEM physicians could not advertise themselves as board-certified. This resulted in a lawsuit between the ABPS and the state’s department of health, originally filed in 2006. In 2009, a district court ruled in New York’s favor, citing the lack of specialty-specific
training as an indication of the certifying bodies’ inequity. This decision was appealed; in 2010, the 2nd Circuit affirmed the Department of Health’s decision.17 Other states such as Texas have struggled with intermittent

approval of the use of the term “board-certified” for BCEM diplomates, but then reconsidered and removed that ability after objection and advocacy from the state ACEP Chapter, only to see it re-approved with minimal notice."

Then why fight it in court if you don't care if your state recognizes BCEM certification or not? Wouldn't insurance companies follow lead of the state board?

Emphasis on some.

You mostly just learn how to practice ****ty corporate medicine from ****ty corporate docs. These fellowships largely exist to serve as a cheap labour force for CMGs and while some people will benefit from the skills acquired its far short of a real residency.

The fact that it's a 2 yr fellowship is even worse- you could finish an ACGME residency in 2.5 years after an IM or FM residency and be appropriately trained and boarded.

Lol can’t believe people fall for these scams.

I think we should open more midlevel residencies instead. Much better than having a non-EM boarded doc.

/sarcasm

How come everyone is saying 2-yr when it wasn't mentioned in the email?
