I have seen in many posts that some people try to get in "for the money" but I just don't buy that line anymore. I think their real aspiration is a solid living combined with the PRESTIGE of being a doctor. These smart arse people with super high scores and no social skills want to be an MD because it's a good thing FOR THEM to be. I don't think they are really stupid enough to think that they'll be raking in madd $$$$ --- unless they are really uppity and think they can be an elite neurosurgeon/cardiologist that everyone comes to around the world.

Anyway, the Dr. thing will continue to be an elite and prestigious position and I think that more than anything will keep it as something that people desire (obviously, there is a cap on doctors, and a fixed amount of schools). You've really gotta be a jackA$$ to not realize that this isn't the place for loot, for how long / what you go through ... it's the ego that burns inside them, that ego that ruins the world ...

That's funny, because I was agreeing with you all the way, especially when I misread "ego that ruins the world" as "ego that RUNS the world".

I mean, let's face it. Whether you're here for the challenge, the money, the prestige, whatever, you're here for YOU, and that's EGO, my friend. Ego does run the world🙂

But you're right everywhere else. To take on as much debt as we do, whatever the reward, you're crazy to do this "for the money". There are many other ways to get the money over much less time over much less sweat, if that's really what they're after.

I guess this is true... but just as there is more than one way to make a ton of money, there is also a ton of ways to get the prestige.
Still, I think it's a powerful factor... For example, sure, I love to work with people, and I am interested in biomedical sciences. Theoretically, I should be just as happy working as a nurse or a lab tech. Money isn't really that important to me. My family was never rich, and currently I am surviving alright with my lab tech's pay. But at the same time, I know I won't be happy as a nurse or a lab tech. In part it's the extra challage-- I'm one of those people who would rather fail repeatedly at the toughest level of the video game then go down a level. But in part it is also the prestige. I was raised to admire that sort of academic prestige. I suppose it's all part of an academic caste system...
And yet, sometimes, it hits me... maybe all I really want is to hide out from the real world in the comfort of an academic setting for another 4 years...

Surviving on a lab tech's pay? Yeah, now, but for how long would you want that position and pay? Are you research or clinical. I'm a lab tech too. It was fun in the beginning, but now, I feel so limited b/c I don't have an advanced degree, and I'm bored all the time. And the pay could be better. Like a post-doc's for example

BTW, I like that video game analogy.

stuff that comes as a result of how I want to help others is just bonus ... that's why I have dreams of helping impoverished people as long as I myself don't get killed doing it

I know it wasn't intentional, but, man, the way you phrased that, "as long as I myself don't get killed doing it" was pretty funny.
