I just wanted to get say hi to all who are currently applying to DO schools this year. I myself will be going through the 6 month process. I am considering applying to NOVA, PCOM, and KCOM so far. I was wondering where some others might also possibly be considering applying. Also, for anyone who has already gone through this process, about how long does it take to completely fill out the application and certify it?

Thanks
Kim

This weekend I went to a conference at Western and i was told that AACOMAS will go live on Monday, May 5th, at which time you can begin the application process. In theory you could finish your application tomorrow, overnight mail your transcripts to aacomas, and if you took the mcat last august, your application would be complete and will be one of the first to be processed come June 1st. So in theory you could have your application done in one day.

Realistically, I think spending a week on your primary application is plently of time to make an application representative of you.

After you have sent your primary, the ball is basically in the court of the schools that applied to... but there are things you can do to nudge the process along...

Hope this helps and good luck!

If there is anything else I can do, ust ask!!

I was just wondering where you have applied to school as of yet and where exactly you are currently wait listed. I think my biggest fear is going through this entire process and not getting in. Actually I belive I speak for the majority of people on SDN. What I have learned from previous friends is that it is not the numbers that matter primarily, it is the entire package deal.

I just took the MCATs two weeks ago and already I am itching to get this application cycle over with. I guess my worst virtue is patience!

Cheers,
Kim

Hey diver...

I handed my applications relatively early...I spent about a week to a week and a half on my primary application(going over grammar, punctuation, and presentation)...and submitted on July 2nd...I applied to 11 MD and 9 DO schools. I got secondaries from these schools as early as 2 weeks later to as late as a month to two months later(i think one or two MD schools send theirs about 2 or 3 months later). Then interviews were as early as August to September to the latest being in January. Ofcourse it all depends on the number of applications thru that year's cycle...and whether all your letters are in. So the numbers I have stated above are referring to if your application is COMPLETE(all LOR's are in and primary apps are in...and whatever other required credentials are needed to complete one's file).

Ofcourse there is the dreaded waitlist for an interview which I got for two MD schools...and you really dont know when you could be called for an interview..its just a waiting game. But I am happy to say that NOVA is the school that impressed me the most out of all the DO schools and the MD schools I was accepted at. Good luck to you in your journey as well!🙂

Kim,

I applied to Western and Touro and I am waitlisted at both. Western's waitlist is unranked (in that they do not tell you your position on the waitlist) and Touro's waitlist has three levels; high, medium, and low (I am on the low waitlist🙁 )

My opinion on what it takes to get in to school changes depending on the mood i am in, but in my opinion DO schools do make a strong attempt to consider many aspects of an applicant's file. I know that at both Western and Touro their respective directors of admissions personally read through each and every persons application; I have no clue whether or not they use GPAs and MCAT scores to divide applications into piles which are read in a specific order, but I would be willing to bet that a strong personal statement and significant extra curriculars and experiences will get you that much closer to secondaries.

Congratulations on getting through the MCAT... several of my friends and my sister did the same and that awful test is nothing to sneeze at... At times I too feel that I lack patience, but the application process will quickly humble you in that respect, otherwise you will go crazy! My primary application was done in June, my secondaries were done before July, but I did not interview until January and March... Here we are almost a year later and still I wait... In the omniscient words of Dr. Drew and Adam Corrola...,"Good Times!"

Slickness,

As Ca$h MaNi said, you could see secondaries as quickly as two weeks post application... Unless I am mistaken if you apply to Johns Hopkins you can have your secondary the same day in that it is available online. With respect to Touro and Western, they are really good about being timely with secondaries... It is awesome that you are so on the ball and hopefully you will be rewarded with a nice early pre-christmas acceptance! I thought I read in a previous thread that your top schools of choice are Western, Touro, and AZCOM... I recommend that you research the possibility of early admission... At Western in order to qualify for early admission you must have a 3.3/27, must have your primary completely completed ASAP, have your secondary done shortly afterwards, and be willing to only hold an application with them until September-ish... Quite a number of hoops to jump through, but if you know that Western is your first choice, then why not go gung ho and get a decision from them ASAP?? Best case you are in medical school in September, worst case, your primary is a smidge late to other schools, but most definitely still in the running. Touro's early admit program is basically the same except on fairly major difference... E-mail me if you don't already know what that difference is!

I am back in Northern California from Western's Osteopathic Awareness conference and Susan Hanson couldnt stess enough about the importance of ASAP, so go out and do your damn thing and you all will do fine!!!

Don't rush your persoal statement for the sake of getting your application in a little earlier. Take your time, make multiple revisions and finish with a quality essay that shows you put a lot of effort and thought into it.

Diver-

Dont' let people's choice of where to apply affect yours. I would suggest that you apply to ALL the DO schools, and then once you get your interviews back, THEN decide where you want to interview. A couple hundred bucks here in the long run will mean nothing. But if you only apply to three schools, and only get one interview, and screw the pooch on it, you're screwed too. Say you apply to 20, get 10 interviews, then you can do however many interviews you want/can afford.

Well as many of you realize the application became active today. I had planned to have it complete in the next few days being that I complete my essay 2 months ago. The only issue is that my finals are not finished till the end of May. This means that my transcripts could not be sent out offically rill early June..Bummer!!

My second issue is the University premedical committe. We have to complete formal interviews before they will write a LOR for my secondaries. From what I am reading they come rather promtly..this may cause an issue in a timely turn around time, This may be a myth but the word on the block is that medical schools look at how long it takes you to return a complete secondary.

I was also wondering if I should wait till I receive my MCAT scores before sending out my application offically. Did anyone else wait to do this? Is it a good idea? My theory is that if I did not do as well as I had anticipated that I do not want the schools seeing that score only. I know that they see all scores, but for some reason I am somewhat concerned about this.

Not a definitive answer, but I've never heard of that being a factor.

I sat on all of my secondaries for at least 3 weeks and still received 5/7 interview invites. I'm probably a perfect model for how to totally screw up in the admissions process.

1. I sent my primaries in mid-November.
2. I sent my secondaries in early February.
3. I submitted my KCOM secondary a day after the stated deadline.
4. My science grades steadily declined over the 4 undergrad years with an embarassing grade in biochem as a senior.
5. I shamelessly padded my GPA with two classes at a community college (one was WAY too simple with my math background).

IMO, med schools don't really care about too much of the stuff that premeds sweat. If they like you, they like you. If they don't, they don't. Just do the best you can from here on out, and don't worry about anything else!

p.s. Applying early definitely helps your cause, because I found out from the two other schools that they didn't have many spots left by the time they processed my secondaries in March.

I just have to say, Brian really isn't a gunner in the making. He's been the biggest supporter and giver of information to anyone who's asked it. I haven't met another pre-med person who has been as open with info as he has. It's refreshing. I think he just likes to feel special and get that message that says he has a PM! Don't worry, Brian, I'll PM you.

The difference is that at most schools you have to only apply to one school for early decision. At Touro, that isn't case. You can apply early decision while applying to other schools. You just have to get t all your stuff in early enough. If you are accepted, you have to pay a larger deposit up front ($4,000 instead of $2,000 with $1,000 additional before 15 May that the non-early decision people have to pay). Maysqrd: Double check my work. Is that all the differences?
