Please share any info regarding N.C. medical schools. Where you applied, when, how long you waited to hear anything after secondary, interview info and any decisions. Anxiously waiting as is everyone else!

I applied to Wake and Duke. I got an interview invite about 2 weeks after I submitted my secondary for Wake. I am waitlisted there. I just got my interview offer after finishing Duke's secondary at the end of August.

I am in-state and I applied to all of the NC schools. All of my files were complete by October or so, with the exception of Wake, which did not send me a secondary until December.

I interviewed at ECU in November--my file has been reviewed once, they say, but no decision. Interviewed at Duke in the beginning of January, no word yet. Interviewed at UNC in the beginning of January, and I got my acceptance this week. And I am interviewing at Wake next week.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the replies-hope we get more. How long did UNC tell you it would take to receive a decision?-thanks again!

Welcome to SDN, NC!! :) I applied to Wake Forest, August MCATer, invited to submit secondary on 11/19, mailed it 12/5, complete 12/20, received invite dated 1/18 on 1/26. I will interview there on 3/8. Good luck with your applications.! :D

j99, Which school is your top choice?? and would you share your stats if you don't mind.??

I am out of state. I got the "We give strong preference to residents of NC. Therefore, we will not be reviewing your file any furthur postcard" from ECU earlier this week. It was postmarked on February 4th. No word yet from the other NC schools.

Hey Medical 123 don't worry too much about the ECU postcard- I think they take 100% NC residents-good luck with the rest of your applications! Does anyone know how often the adcoms meet at UNC/ECU?

NC, check your PM's.

C'mon, y'all there must be more people with Carolina on their minds! :D

No b/c UNC has around like a 90% instate acceptance rate and no people of right mind from out-of-state would apply there and there are not that many people from NC on this board.

I just got an acceptance from UNC this weekend. I hope I get one from Duke later in the month :) If anyone has questions about the UNC interview, let me know.

I am in-state in NC. I interviewed at UNC in Nov, ECU in Dec, and Wake last week. I was accepted at ECU, on hold at UNC, and on alternate list at Wake.

Anybody else on hold at UNC? I guess it is just a waitlist.

I was out-of-state and have no ties to NC. I think that alot of out-of-state people have this mindset that it is impossible to get in out-of-state and don't apply. So my advice to out-of-staters like myself applying next year is to give it a shot! You might be surprised.

I applied to Duke, Wake, and UNC. I interviewed at Duke and UNC in December, and Wake in Jan. I got accepted to Wake on friday and have heard nothing from UNC yet. When did those of you accepted to UNC interview? Did you get a letter from UNC telling you that you were on hold? Im in-state. Thanks

I interviewed at ECU in Nov. have not heard anything back from them yet. They told me not to expect anything until March. I'm in-state but didn't apply to Duke or Wake. As far as NC schools go is ECU on the bottom of everyone's list? If it is I guess that's a good sign for me.

Fly--to answer your questions:

1) I _think_ my top choice will be UNC. I chose UNC over duke for undergrad, and would probably do it again for the same reasons. I am just not convinced that Duke is _that_ much better, for what I would have to pay for it. But I'm not completely certain.

2) stats: 35 mcat, 3.9, in state, no research and precious little volunteering, but a decent amount of graduate coursework in policy and ethics.

Bobcat-when did you interview at UNC and would you mind sharing your stats! Congratulations on your acceptance-way to go!

Excuse me for posting this question again but does anyone know how often the adcom's meet at UNC or ECU? Thanks!

Just wondered how you heard about your acceptance - by snail mail? Since the interview offer came by phone. Waiting also

They told me theyd call for the acceptance

Logan, I noticed that you posted an acceptance to UNC on another thread-congratulations! How long ago did you interview and did they call you today?

Yep it was weird, I interviewd on the 23 of January and today I was thinking I might start hearing from them soon. Last night I got the call. Unfortunately, my roomate was on long distance and was pretty rude to him. Hope hes not too pissed.

Hell yes!!!!!!.........Got the acceptance call last night from UNC.

way to go catengr.......

Awesome Catengr- how did you find out that you were originally waitlisted at UNC?

catengr-

Congrats on your acceptance to UNC. I PM'd you to ask some advice. Thanks and good luck.

NC,

I guess I wasn't actually waitlisted, I was told that my app was "on-hold" about 2 months after interviewing. I called the office often to check my status.

Congratulations to catengr on his acceptance to my alma mater. I've been reading some of the posts on NC medical schools. Everyone seems to think of ECU SOM as some second rate medical school. WE continually rank as one of the top programs in primary care medicine. The US and NEws report currently has us ranked #17. Overall, we do pretty well in the match. Usually, 60-70% of our class receive their first choice of programs. At the end of the day, graduates at from all four medical schools are called doctor. Clinically, I beleive our students are better trained than most NC medical students. Duke, Wake, and UNC-CH are very research driven programs. Duke and UNC share some of the same patient population. ECU and Wake have pretty isolated patient poulations. Personally, I believe a major strength is our class size. During the clinical years, we are no more than 10 per rotation. This allows better interaction between attendings, residents, and students. No matter what medical school you attend, you'll probably become an educated, well rounded physician.

hi. I am not from NC, but when to school there in NC. I interviewed at Duke in early nov. No response yet. Crossing my fingers...

dukee

Orthodog-thanks for your input. I know you are probably short on free time but I sent you a PM if you get the chance to respond-thanks!

Please remember to fill us in if you have heard anything from any of North Carolina's big 4. BTW tough loss for Duke fans! :( <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I got a phone call last night from UNC informing me of my acceptance. I was on "hold" post interview. I interviewed mid December and am in-state. Just thought I would share the news for fellow NC people.

congrats rubberducky. I got in last month, but I want to defer (to finish my professional degree...I've got one more year to go). Is anyone else thinking about deferring? I have written Dr. Hoole (like they told me to do), but no one can give me an idea of how likely a deferral grant will be. Other schools told me up front that it would be no problem, but UNC is acting a little more anal.

Awesome Rubberducky!!! I sent you a PM.

Anyone heard anything from UNC that interviewed on or around the 28th of January? I remember reading a post on here that someone who interviewed ont eh 23rd of Jan. heard about the second week in Feb. so I am getting kind of antsy...still have the Wake interview coming up but I wanna go to UNC!

i just sent this to nc, but i figured i might as well post it too...

yup, i qualified as a resident, but i'm not currently at school in nc.

here are some dates:
2ndary submitted: 10/13
interview request: 1/23
interview: 3/4
accepted: 3/11

i had a really great interviewer, as in we really got along, so i'm pretty sure he was of some help. i guess what i'm trying to say is that my situation might have been atypical, so don't use it too strongly as a benchmark.

good luck!

Has anyone heard from ECU yet?

not a word from ecu--but I got in to unc over a month ago.

Hey guys,
I'm an NC person too. I'm currently on hold at UNC and I interviewed way back in December. That's not a good sign, is it? And as for ECU, I interviewed ther in December and they say they've reviewed my application 3 times but still no news. Arghhhhhhhh!!! Help. What do you guys think? It's bad to be on hold isn't it? At this point the class is probably pretty full right? Does anyone have any inside info on either UNC or ECU??????? Oh yeah, for you NC residents who have gotten acceptances to either UNC or ECU, what kind of stats do y'all have? I hope that doesn't sound nosy but this is my 1st time applying and I'm really curious about what stats they are looking for bc I know peeps w/ really high numbers that get rejected. Let me know if you feel comfortable!!! Thanks!

Hi,
I am considering moving to the Raleigh-Durham area this summer. My fiance and I will be applying to med school for 2003, so we want to make sure we qualify for North Carolina in state status. Anyone know the residency 'rules' or have any advice about moving there?

thanks!
u2ecila

Hey guys,
I am a Cali resident, but got an interview from UNC-Chapel Hill... so there is hope for you out-of-state peeps!

(I didn't go though, since I had already gotten into Einstein and prefered it over UNC.)

Interestingly, all my in-state schools (UCs)showed me no love... go figure...

Regarding North Carolina residency-if you look on UNC's website they have a whole page which is very explicit about residency requirements. Hope this helps!

hi huys,
i'm also an nc resident and i'm on hold at UNC and ECU is still reviewing my file. Anyone who's gotten in to either of the 2, wanna share your stats?

way to go catengr! good job! i'm on hold right now too. are you in state or out of state? what are your stats like?

u2ecila--
I established residency in NC this past year. Basically there are a few things you have to do: register/vote here, have NC car insurance and tags, have a NC license, and live here for 12 months prior to matriculation. I also have worked here since June 1 and pay state taxes here. I do not however own a house or anything like that. It's really not too tough, but you have to genuinely want to live here, and convince them of that. There are places where you can write info about yourself or family to do that. Hope that helps. Oh ya, they wont consider you a resident until you have a majority of those things done, so do them as soon as you get here if you can. :)

Any news from North Caroina????????????

Hi, I am an in-state NC resident and applied to all of teh big 4. I interviewed for UNC and ECU in November, Wake and Duke in Jan. I got accepted to Wake also in Jan and waitlisted at Duke. Still waiting to hear from UNC and ECU- I am told I am "on hold" at UNC and I get the same "my application has been reviewed several time but no decision at this point" from ECU. So frustrating!! I live in CH so I am a regular in the UNC admiss office. The committee meets every other Monday, this coming Monday being the next time. Before you get dicussed in the adcomm, you have to be voted out of "subcommittee", which is a smaller group made up of 5-6 members of the adcomm. THey meet on alternating weeks as well. The latest news from UNC is that they should let everyone know by Apr 15 a decision, one way or the other. I have heard that hardly anyone gets off the waiting list at UNC (not "on hold" but the actual waiting list). Does anyone know if this is true?
