For those of you hoping that it is not too late, here is my advice (and others can agree or disagree)…

Obviously, applying early would have been the best option. But you may ask, what is early? I consider sending your completed supplemental applications to schools by the beginning of September early because some schools offer interviews starting as early as August. In my opinion, students that apply early have the best opportunities to matriculate at the school of their choice.

So do I think that students applying now still have a chance at matriculating at their top choice? YES! But, GET YOUR BUTT MOVING! Don’t waste too much time looking at averages because students with higher and lower scores get in (AKA…an average). Yes, the schools might want stronger applicants right now, but you can be a strong applicant in other ways. Don’t spend time worrying about your scores, just work on the parts that you can control (i.e. writing a strong personal statement/supplemental essay, preparing hardcore for your interviews, continuing activities that show you truly want to be an osteopathic physician).

But some of you may question why schools accept applications until April and interview through the summer. Let me tell you about what the director at TUCOM told my interview group a few weeks ago...

The school receives about 4000 applications from ACCOMAS. The school sends out supplemental applications to about 2000 applicants. The school will interview 20 candidates per week, starting in mid August and ending in April/May (you can do the math…roughly 400). The director explained that by the end of December, the class of 125 students is almost completely full. Right now, TUCOM has interviews scheduled into December. From January to April, the school will interview students for the waitlist and for the remaining few spots in the class (maybe 10-15 spots?). TUCOM ranks their waitlist (high, medium, and low). The director said that students at the high end of the waitlist have a good chance at being accepted.

This may or may not be the case for all schools, but it’s a common story at most schools. In the next few months, the osteopathic schools will see an increase in applications, as some students will use osteopathy as a backup because the allopathic schools said no. Applying now will help you beat the rush, even if your scores aren’t stellar. Who do you think the admissions office would rather have in next year’s class, someone using osteopathy as a backup or someone truly interested in osteopathy? At each of the interviews I have been on thus far, current students have bragged about submitting their applications on the deadline. Those students were extremely lucky.

Bottom line…don’t waste any more time, APPLY NOW!!
