How do you guys feel about their MANDATORY attendance policy? Here's what Nova says:

"At Nova Southeastern University - Health Professions Division, attendance at ALL scheduled instructional periods is MANDATORY. Failure to consider this requirement is considered in the evaluation of a student's academic performance and professional attitude and may result in a failing grade for the course. Students shall report to the office of the individual college's Office of Student Affairs in writing the reasons for all absences within 24 hours of each occurrence...."

Wow, sounds like we're back to high school again! I personally think that kind of sucks!! I'm so used to skipping lectures for one course and go to the library and study for an upcoming exam for another course, but if I want Nova, I guess that I can't do that anymore!!!

They also have a MANDATORY dress code which I'm cool about and have no problems with, but the MANDATORY attendance thing will be hard to get accustom to.

Are any of you out there, at times, learn better on your own than going to lectures in certain courses like me? Wow, I think that I read about this about Nova on this forum, but now it's all coming to a reality! Something to consider if you're EXTREMELY interested in Nova for you dental education!

Yah-ZZZ,

Whats going on ?? I just want to let you know that I too was upset when I heard about the strict attendance policy. I also like to study on my own outside of class at times especially before an exam.

That was a question I asked the students when I was there and from what they told me it did not seem as strict in reality as it was on paper. The 3 girls I talked to all told me the same thing...We go to the lectures that we want too no one tells us anything but there are those few lectures that the intsructor will start taking attendance if everyone continues to skip. It is not as bad as it sounds really. 1 girl even told me that she hates going to the lectures and always skips and no one has told her anything yet. I think that they may of had a problem before with too many people not showing up to class that may be the case or it may just be a way to make sure that their students get the most out of their education so that they can do well on their boards. Either way the policy did not seem to be in effect when I was there.

As for the clothing policy. They require you to wear scrubs or a shirt and tie for men. I am not sure about the women. I did not mind that policy at all especially since I want to wear the scrubs..easier getting up in the morning and less money on clothes right?? :) There is one thing that everyone must wear at all times and that is your Nova white lab coat jacket which is really nice. It has a patch on the shoulder thats states which division your in ( college of dental medicine) and it must be worn at all times. They considered it an honor. I agree. Good Luck next week!

UofM01,

I see! I guess I'll find out for myself next week! I'm going to sit right in front of my 3 interviewers/professors and Su-Ann and say "So tell me what the f#@k is up with this MANDATORY attendance shi#!?" and see what they say!? And then I'll stand and drop my pants and moon them!! I bet they'll love that!! For sure acceptance act right there baby!!

I hope that the mandatory attendance thing is not as strict as on paper. I'm definitely looking forward to next Wednesday!

Hey guys,

The attendance policy is strict, but this is probably a good thing. When you're paying $30-$40K in tuition alone for dental school, you want to get your money's worth. Besides that, it helps you to develop the discipline that you'll need when you start practicing and your first patient is seated at 7:15am.

nova isn't the only school in the country to have a mandatory attendence policy. i've seen several others with the same. honestly, i wouldnt be surprised if every school didnt have that policy. think about it: the schools reputation rests in the quality of the training they give their students. if the students arent there to be trained, it hurts the school. it's only natural for them to require attendence. i think it would be interesting to ask nova students if that policy holds true. it seems to me like everyone might have a few absences here and there.
