***I'm posting this in Pre-Allo, Pre-Osteo, and Non-Traditional forums****

This was posted in "The New Physician" a magazine put out by AMSA (American Medical Student Association).

There was an article about free clinics in the November issue and the pre-med advisor from Princeton wrote in asking if there was a directory of free clinics because that is where he recommends his students get clinical experience.

They posted the following two websites that have free clinic directories (also some good information about volunteer liability etc):

http://www.volunteersinhealthcare.org/home.htm

http://www.medkind.com/fcf/

If you are looking for clinical experience and do not feel that volunteering is giving you want you need, I would check out these two sites for free clinics in your area where you can help out.

I second this idea of working in free clinics. I worked in one before I got into med school and it was a great experience. The docs that volunteer there are generally great people who care about patients and medicine. Additionally, if the docs get to know you and you have any clinical experience there is a possibility that you will get to do a lot of things that you wouldn't get do otherwise. Excellent opportunity

How can I find I free clinic in my area? I looked on those website links but could not really find what I needed, anyone have some ideas?

Somebody with no clinical experience should definitely call up one of these free clinic centers?

So what would one be doing at these free clinics? Would they just stand around and watch doctors work or actually help out in some way that would involve some sort of direct patient interaction?

Absolutely. The free clinic I volunteer at had me drawing blood, taking bp, temps., weight, etc. within a month of signing up. The experience has been fantastic and given me opportunities that I otherwise would not have been able to get. In addition, I find the work here extremely satisfying as the patients here are without health insurance yet because of us are able to recieve quality health care - which most uninsured Americans have to go without. It has been a challange as well; the majority of the patients speak little or no English. This has provided me an opportunity to grow in terms of experience of other cultures. Most major metros tend to have a few clinics like this. I would suggest finding one by all means. Because of the patient base, the rules tend to be more lax and you will get closer patient contact.

Does this list free clinics on it? I didn't find any such information as this appears to be an advocate group for free clinics to sign up.

Ok so I wanted to find what you are talking about and tried Google. Whether it is to alleviate pain or discern the source of a chronic ailment, Antonio’s intuitive energy and passion for helping others inspires the birth of many new tomorrows." http://www.antonioshealinghands.com/
