I am applying in the 2007 cycle and thinking of graduating a semester early and going to south america or europe next spring. Is it absolutely necessary to be in the U.S. near home in the spring if you are holding acceptances already and have access to a computer/internet?

Is this just a terrible idea, or do you all think it could work?

I think its a great idea...I wouldn't leave before march and cross your fingers you get into a definitive first choice because you won't be around for second visits. You will likely need a parent or good friend to help you out with mail, because once you get in the mail doesn't stop as their are background checks, health forms, financial aid junk and on and on and on that needs your attention. As long as you get everything squared away I don't see why you couldn't take off.

Well,
I was accepted to med school on Jan. 25th and I immediately booked a ticket to India and am just now finishing up my traveling, nearly 2 months later. Actually writing this from london. Definitely possible. Before you go though you should take care of FAFSA stuff and fill out as much financial aid stuff as possible...although for my school its all online. But the whole tax return info and all that for your FAFSA is a hassle. I was running around the week before packing, getting immunizations, and doing FAFSA of all things. if you have travel questions let me know, ive done quite a bit. i would highly recommend having a bit of an adventure before med school starts and the pain begins.
