For those who have done a summer research internship

I have a question for anyone who has done a formal summer research internship at a medical school or a hospital affiliated with a medical school. Did you end up applying to that medical school? If so, do you think your research experience at that school gave you an "in" to the school or gave you some kind of upper hand when you applied? I'm just trying to see if admission committees would consider you more highly if you have prior experience with the school. thanks~
