Hello guys! I first want to say I am not here to start up an argument on which profession is better, Be nice 🙂 . Both professions are really different. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I really respect and interest in both professions. Just like me, I am sure some of you (not all) actually considered both profession at one time.

So, It would be nice for you to share why you choose Med over Dentistry?

if you choose Dentistry, why you choose it over Med?

Again, I don't want this thread to end up in a debt on which profession is better. So, trolls, plz don't waste your time here. I havn't yet any shadow dental or med doctors. I know I can't just make my decision based on other ppl's opinions. It all comes down to personal choice. So, I don't really want too see other ppl commenting negatively on other ppl's reason for their decision to avoid turning this thread turning into a garbage. It will be interesting to hear what experice and thoughts you guys went through when you faced with this dilemma. Plz share! 👍

I thought about both - mostly because my friends and gf are in dentistry. Plus the idea of making a lot of money was nice.

But, in the end I just loved working in the hospital and feeling like I was helping people. I know dentists help people too but in my heart of hearts I wanted to be a doctor. Not that I don't look at my loan amounts every day and think about how much I'll make as a resident and how many years I'll be in debt.....

My father is a dentist. It would be nice to go into dentistry and work in his practice, eventually taking over if he allowed it. But I don't want to be a dentist, as it seems like utter tedium.

If I liked dentistry, one reason I'd LOVE to be a dentist are the nurses. For those of you who are Koreans and go to Korean dentists you'll understand why..

ALL THE NURSES ARE FREAKIN HOT AND YOUNG AND THEY'RE ALWAYS LEANING OVER YOU AND SMOOSHING THEIR BREASTS AGAINST YOUR FACE. Oh wait, in that case I'd rather be the patient. But I'm the dentist gets some type of similar treatment =)

You know, I always wondered.... Let's say you applied to dental school and went in for an interview and they asked you "Why do you want to go into dentistry?" What would you say?

My friend who's going to USC dental told me she said something about being big on dental hygiene and the aesthetic aspect of dentistry - making people feel good about their smile and all that jazz

I personally think that dentistry is a great profession. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to sit on a little stool for 8 hours a day. I personally can't do it. Next thing you know you're growing a beer gut.

dentists have better family lives.once again,no one is going to die of a toothache.plus if youre a woman and you want to have children, being a dentist means you can cancel your afternoon's patients, reschedule for the next day,and go home and spend time with your kid. versus having to be on call and leave them with a succession of nannies all the time.

yup.

Everyone keeps talking about how easy dentists have it. What about orthodontists? Talk about easy...

That's the life. They pull in like $5,000 off each kid. Plus you're only really dealing with kids, who are much easier to deal with than old people with rotting teeth.

Seriously, I would like to see more responses to this thread. I am having a serious attack of second thoughts about applying to med school. Yes, I love medicine, but right now I'm not sure if I love it SO much more than dentistry that it makes up for the serious hard work and sacrifices that I will need to make for so many years. I need to get out of this mindset fast since I have some med school interviews coming up!

Well, just to cast a little light from the other direction on this thread, don't go thinking dental school is some walk in the park. Dental school and med school are two entities with a lot of differences, but also a lot of similarities, and chief among those similarities is the rigor of the curriculum. As everyone else in this thread is suggesting, do what you love.

If you are still not sure at this point I'd be more inclined for medical school as it gives you more time to clarify your interests and still leaves many doors open.Dentistry is a great choice if you are pretty sure its what you want, otherwise it forces you into a specialization before you are ready to decide.

I hate talking about teeth! I hate it when people put their fingers in their mouth, I hate teeth references, I hate the dentist. That is why I am going into medicine instead. If I could stand talking about teeth I would go into dentistry; better lifestyle, similar pay. You could always go into dentistry and then do an OMS residency, those guys have it MADE.

I think I can answer.

Unfortunately I discovered dentistry a bit too late. I've already applied to (too many) medical shools and don't have the time and energy to study and take the DAT, plus apply so late. But a friend of mine let me hang out at his practice recently (7 full work days) and I loved it! If you love working with your hands and intend to do medical procedures (like me) dentistry would be a good fit. A HUGE part of dentistry is aestetics and I'd imagine those how enjoy creating art would enjoy dentistry. What I liked was the private practice setting and the really laxed atmosphere of a small staff. I work at a surgeon's office with a huge staff and it's like a zoo there sometimes. My friend has a great lifestyle. He did a five year program after high school and was a full blown dentist at 22! Eight years later, his practice is pretty busy now, but never rushed. He works 5.5 days a week and has a lot of free time to read, shop, fish, etc. Sure, he probably makes less than the surgeon I work for but I think he's way ahead of him as far as lifestyle. Ask any middle aged surgeon how long's he's been in practice. Because if the training, most have only been practicing a few years. It's tough to guage who makes a more significant contribution, though. What more important, boob implants or a root canal? Anyway, if time with your family is a huge concern for you, dentistry can afford you more flexability. I know that if I don't get accepted to medical school this year, I probably won't even bother applying again (for the 3rd time) and just apply to dental schools.

My 2 cents.
