Foreign MD/PhD programs?

Hey,

Does anyone know if there are MD/PhD programs overseas? I am specifically looking at Australia and Europe but can't find anything online.

To my knowledge foreign MD/PhD programs do not exist as they do in the US. In many parts of europe there isn't even an MD, it is a MBBS.

Also, if you are interested in returning to practice in the US you will need to complete a US residency, which is typically easier to get into if you attend a US school.

Yes, I believe that MD/PhD is unique to US schools particularly.

What's your desire to go to school outside the US? Are you not going to practice in the US? If you're going to live here the majority of your life attend school here.

Honestly, I'm just kinda bored with the US. Dad is in the army so we lived almost everywhere in the states (except California which I would love to go to school at except for the fact that is is near impossible for out of staters to get in). MD/PhD programs are 7-8 years which is a huge chunk of your life to be bored. It would be more exciting to go to school somewhere new. I know it will be harder to get back into medicine in the states but i'm cool with that. Just the fact that it takes 7-8 years makes my choice less career based and more happiness based.

The multiple degree program phenomenon seems to be limited to the US and Canada. There might be some MBBS/PhD programs out there but many have their MBBS students apply for a PhD after a few years of studies. That said, the only overseas one I can think of is the Duke-NUS MD/PhD program.

However, you would have to look into how these programs are funded. As an international, you probably wouldn't get a stipend from the government.

Yes there are, one of my friends is doing it in the UK. They probably don't come with a stipend though, and the nature of the MBBS means you start it after high school. It's not really a proper alternative to the MD/PhD here, especially if you want to stay in the US.

Technion in Israel has an MD/PhD program.
