Hi, I am from China and currently in Houston as a research student for a year and I will go back to my country after that. I have been comtemplating on becoming a dentist and I think the profession suits me really well, considering my science background and my personality.

I have several questions regarding getting into dental school and I would be really grateful if anyone could answer them.

1. I obtained a bachelor and master degree in China and wonder if I need to get a 4 year bachelor degree here in the US before I could apply for dental school? I am currently pursuing my doctoral degree.

2. I know that DAT is not available in China and wonder if I will have to come back to the US to take the test?

3. What are the chances that foreign students like me could to get into dental school here in the US?

4. Would having a high score in DAT help me getting into a dental school here?

5. Approximately how much tuition is needed to pay for dental school?

Thank you for your help.

Hey mangosteen5,

I'm also a foreign student so I will try to give you some info.

1. As far as I know, unless you are a trained dentist from China you should not be able to attend any dental school in the US. The exception would be to get a Bachelor degree from an American university.

2. Most likely you will have to come back to the US to take the DAT, specially if you say that there is no chance to take in your country. For more info on that, I would check with some university from China.

3. At times, being a foreign student can increase your odds to get into dental schools. I would check with dental schools that in this sense tend to support international students.

4. Obviously, the better score you get, the better chances you will have to get into any dental school.

5. Tuition vary from school to school, specially concerning international tuition fees. I would check out the website of each school of your interest, there is usually a section that provides information about that.

I hope I was to answer to some of your questions. As I'm not 100% sure, others should share their knowledges with you.

Good luck!

It is not clear if you are more enthralled with dentistry or with returning to the US. You will not be expected to obtain a degree from the US but you may be required to take the pre requisites depending on you background. The DAT is only given in the US and Canada. Why not take the test before you leave the country? There are limited number of ds that accept international students. As such you will be competing with other international students. Expect the cost of ds to be ~250K(+/-). If you are truly interested you need to invest ~$40 and buy the 2008 ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools.
