...anyone know about this organization off hand ? As an MS II who is potentially interested in anesthesia, I applied for a fellowship that they offer for medical students. Any input is greatly appreciated !

anybody else apply for this grant? Did you hear back? I am an M3 that applied. I wonder how competitive it is going to be. They didn't give very much notice to people, so I figured there wouldn't be that many people that apply. 😕

In terms of the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship, I'm not sure how competitive the program is, but this is the first year if I'm not mistaken.

However, with the number of Host Insitiutions and various programs at each, I believe there will be a fair amount of spots available.

As a MSIII interested in Anesthesioloy I definitely applied to this program and am eager to hear the results! Award notification was mail this past Friday Jan 21st, so I should know by mid-week.

I'm curious how many other people applied and when you hear from the program in terms of acceptance please share!

So I spoke with the Director of FAER and he stated that they we extremely pleased with a number of applicants, but only had a grant large enough to cover 6 of the 67 applicants for the 2005 pilot program.

....I know all too well....I definitely received my rejection letter today....ah well...

yeah, I didn't get it either... it was a disappointment! I guess a 1/10 acceptance rate isn't bad. Next year it will be far more I am sure.

Did anyone apply to FAER MSARF (foundation for anesthesiology research and education medical student anesthesiology research fellowship) this year?

Awesome! I will surely apply then.

We often hear that in order to keep the specialty viable, it is necessary to do research. I wonder whether the need is greater in the basic science or the clinical arenas. Anyone have any idea?

thanks,

It seems like people already received their answers...but please shoot me a message if you are stil interested in this program (maybe for next year, etc.). I was selected for the fellowship last year and I had an amazing experience.

By the way, I believe the final number of funded fellows from the pilot year was 14 out of 67. At least that's what they told everyone at the ASA meeting.

Good luck in the future to those still interested!

not alot of activity on this thread...but I just found out today I was accepted to the program, so if anyone has participated before, I'd really appreciate being able to ask some questions about the experience. thanks!

I just wanted to bump this thread to see if any of last year's folks had good experiences with this program. Have they increased their funding since 2005? Accepting 6 people isn't even worth having a website.

Anyone apply this year? I'm waiting to hear results...

yeah! i got the acceptance letter yesterday. Im pretty stoked, but I too was wondering what to expect. were u actually working 40hrs/week? did u go into lab on the weekends? did u like the experience overall?

Hey, I got one too! Congrats! I think we are actually only working 34 hours per week because we are supposed to spend six hours shadowing. Did you get all set up with your host school yet? I'm still getting things worked out but I am really excited to start.

Bumping. Do you guys plan to shadow one person all summer or several people? I'm thinking it would be better to shadow someone different each week so that you can see all different practices of anesthesia.

yeah if possible, i will def. try and shadow as many diff. docs as possible. not only to get a better idea of the different surgical/anesthesia specialties, but you never want to leave it to ONE doc to ruin your idea of a specialty!

although i geuss there is something to be said about shadowing one person...u get to know them very well and maybe even keep close contact with them throughout the rest of med school.

Okay, cool. 36 hrs a week, huh..I think I can handle that. 👍 Yeah, I think I've finally done as much as I can away from the actual place. I finally, as in today, found a place to live. It was such a hassle not being able to interview with any of the subletters. I finally decided on this boarding style cottage house/hostle/efficiency...whatver that is. Kinda pricey, but its in the middle of the city so walking won't be a problem. How bout you? You got everything all situated?

I found a few people so far that are willing to let me shadow. One doc does anesthesia for organ transplants, which is pretty cool. I think you will get to know whoever you're working for well so that will be the best of both if you shadow some other people.

I am pretty much ready now. I was a little bummed because one of my friends who is an MS4 and was interested in anesthesia is now telling me that anesthesia was really boring. I think the rotation was only a week or two though so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

Yeah don't worry about it. If anything, this is a great opportunity to figure out if we like the field! I can't imagine a better way other than rotating in anesth..and we're not there yet. So, at WORST..you've experienced a new campus, made a little money, met new people, maybe found someone you'd like to keep in contact with, and decided anesthesiology is not for you. Not a bad deal! Then you don't have to worry about spending any elective hours rotating in it fourth year. But don't let your buddy make your decision for you, def. go into it with an open mind. Good luck, have fun!

Yeah, I think this summer will help me see what anesthesia is really like. I know it's not the same as being an anesthesiologist if I'm just a student, but it's more anesthesia experience than a lot of med students get. Most people just do like a week or two it seems like.

No, I def. wouldn't let someone else decide for me. It's just we were both really into anesthesia and now I feel kinda abandoned you know? When you're excited, you don't want someone else telling you that it's boring!

BUMP

So my school isn't on the list (the updated one online)... if I wanted to do this, would I have to do an away rotation at an institution that participates in FAER, and then apply to the fellowship? It says FAER is for 8-12 weeks, but I don't know that our aways are 8 weeks long... confused...😕

I would be astonished if, somewhere on the FAER website, there wasn't some contact information instructing you where to turn within their organization for actual information regarding their programs, as opposed to the loose hearsay you might find here.

I think maybe you're confusing this program with something else. Aways are clinical electives at other schools for fourth years getting ready to apply for residency. If you're talking about the FAER research program for med students, you don't have to do any aways. Most of us were in the summer between our first and second years, so we hadn't even done our required clerkships yet. Just get the application from the website and pick a school where you like the project. Most people don't stay at their home institution and the program even encourages you to go somewhere else.
