Hi,

I'm considering becoming an FP and deliverying babies as an FP (only a 2nd year med student so I have some time to think about it). I know FP's that deliver babies make more money than FP's that don't but wouldn't the malpractice insurance (for FP's doing OB) also be signifigantly higher? So wouldn't the higher salary be cancelled out by the higher insurance premiums associated with OB? (b/c I know OB/GYN's pay an obscene amount for malpractice coverage). Just wondering, thanks.

Where I practice, in Oregon, fewer and fewer FPs do OB. My group finally gave up OB 2 years ago when we realized it cost us more money in malpractice premiums than we earned from doing deliveries. I think you'll have a hard time doing OB as an FP unless you work for a community health center, federally designated rural health center, etc. with subsidized government malpractice insurance.
Good luck,
Lisa PA-C

in washington several of the larger group practices allow fp docs the option of doing ob. they have to avg 12 routine deliveries a yr to keep insurance which is paid for by the group. maybe 20 % of the docs in most groups actively pursue ob cases and they make significantly more money for doing so.

if you work for/with a residency program, the program will pay your malpractice insurance 👍
