Several (un)fortunate events as of late have presented an interesting opportunity for me, and I could use some helpful advice...

I am technically attending a medical school already, but unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances (not related to me personally) have allowed me re-evaluate my current school choice and possibly reapply elsewhere. My stats and experiences should allow me to go pretty much anywhere, provided my 2003 MCAT scores will be accepted.

So where should I go? I want medical school to be the best 4+ years of my life, without having to worry about grade competition and bureacratic/administrative bull****. Flexible, integrated curriculum, fun quirky colleagues, and first-rate clinical opportunities are all important factors to me... the non-hardcore science aspects of medicine are the experiences I seek most... biopsychosocial, health care management, volunteer work, travel/study abroad... just a few keywords.

Ideally, I'd like to be in a metropolitian locale, but happiness and camaraderie are paramount. Spoonfeeding (namely for the boards) is good too, as I've been through hell and worked my ass off for this opportunity, and I'd like to be able to really enjoy myself in medical school without being overwhelmed with (busy) work.

Any suggestions or thoughtful guidance? Thank you, and happy new year!

Oh so secretive! C'mon what is your situation? How interesting. Go anywhere you say  ? Just go to Harvard. Sounds like you deserve it?

Come join me at Stony Brook in Long Island. NYC is a train ride away, our last year Match list was absolutely bananas, our class includes a few art majors, a PhD from MIT, a couple of MBAs, and a former pro roller hockey player. The only question mark from what you listed is spoonfeeding the boards...

Free ride? Nice gig. You were (and intended to be, I'm sure) just ambiguous enough that I might wanna hear the details.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

This unlikely clause puts the rest of your post into question. Med schools care as much about "fit" as stats and so there is no such thing as a candidate who is a shoe in everywhere. Perhaps if you fleshed out your situation and stats a bit better you'd be more credible.

Trust me, I know how to play the game... resourcefulness and knowing how to sell oneself are key... how else do you think I got a full-ride? ;-)

How did u get a full-ride? Can you get me one too? 😀

hmmm... rich dead relative (the "unfortunate event") or how about getting on a government scholarship? Also, playing the game? Either you must have Polaroids of every adcom in the country in a compromising situation, or you don't know your own limitations.

Further, how can you be the grand applicant of 2006, yet you're going to a medical school that you're so eager to leave? And you say that you want medical school to be a great 4 year experience. If you're already a student, wouldn't you be a transfer? And wouldn't that mean that you're setting yourself up for a 2-3 year experience?

I call fake on this thread.

Not a fake, just an unorthodox situtation... and I would be applying for the class of 2007. While I could probably throw a pity-party for a sympathy acceptance for 2006, I ultimately want to gain an acceptance based on my own merits; hence, (re)applying as an incoming student (not as a transfer) is the only honorable thing to do.

Also, never did I mention that I am eager to leave my current school... it's just that I now have the opportunity to critically re-examine my educational investment and I just want to make sure that I am getting the very best experience that can be offered.

I call shenanigans as well....nice try though

Without more specific info, you are wholly unbelievable.

And why ask a bunch of pre-meds, oh great one ... ?

Come on, give me a break!

Whatever, maybe he has a huge, promiscuous schlong. Or an active imagination. Or both!
Seriously, OP, your 2003 scores might be too old for most schools. For reals though. If you can go anywhere try to go to most outrageously poor quality school you can go to. With your elephant schlong you'll be a real-life urban legend and get to bed all the locals.

I wish I didn't waste time reading these kind of threads. I guess that could be my new years resolution

...or perhaps the OP is in New Orleans or a similar region, whose medical school may be experiencing difficulties... wow, people are quick to jump on someone. OP?

Finally, someone with situational-awareness, thank you! 😍

I should have known better than to rely on naive and uninsightful pre-meds, but I was hoping someone might have a few thoughful suggestions. I am definitely seeking professional guidance in the matter, but I thought I might also supplement my 'official' inquiries with some unsolicited advice from a knowledgeable (?) audience.

Good Call, I think I'll make that one of mine as well.

...I bet you suck at interpersonal relationships. You're doing yourself no good.

A little mini-poll for everyone!

This post smells worse than:
A) A used diaper filled with Indian food
B) Big Foot's d*ck
C) A turd covered with burnt hair

I say C! You can NEVER go wrong with C.
(P.S. This is an Anchorman reference!)

OK. I raise you one Fear Factor contestant eating giant slugs in her bikini!

Here's a nice visual:

Its good to see this post digress into meaningless meaning.

Hooray

I felt cheated reading through these threads until I came upon these last few posts. I am mildly entertained.

Which one of the slimy slugs is the OP? JK. I guess I shouldn't say that about someone who is probably going to be my future colleague; it's just that I can't stand arrogance as a personality trait. It turns me off faster than BO. :barf:

Brudduh, the OP wants to go to med school on the set of scrubs!

If you are a Tulane et al. student and want to leave, you'll still have to declare on your application that you're currently a medical student elsewhere. Adcoms will certainly want to question your motives about switching schools, even if you are in an unfortunate situation.

No doubt. Why on earth would you have invested the time and energy of getting through 2 years of medical school and then want to do it all over again, but this time pay for it? I smell troll.

As a student at Tulane or another school facing significant problems, somebody with the OP's supposed amazing application could easily transfer to another US school. So why would you even consider starting over? That's what stinks this post up for me (on top of the oozing arrogance).

If an earlier poster's post was accurate, and the OP is a student in NOLA, my understanding is that schools are NOT allowing students to transfer (to prevent the NOLA schools from being totally emptied) which would explain why the OP wants to reapply instead of transfering. I am not sure that other schools would take an applicant like this though, there is a question about if you have ever matriculated at a medical school before on the AMCAS, and I think if you say yes, you will be at a HUGE disadvantage.

Yes, yes, but do you think the op's trolling?

Even if we assume the person was coming from one of the New Orleans schools, and that he could apply de novo (which I doubt, given that those schools have not closed up shop), why is it credible that he thinks he could get in anywhere? Neither of those schools are really fighting the US News top 10 for many of the same matriculants.

I thought med schools had a general policy against allowing students at other med schools from reapplying as first years? There are quite a few that won't even accept transfer students...

Ditto. Actually, I also demand that you speak in a British or South African accent.

what the **** just happened here? how did Lucid quote a post that appeared after her own???

I think an adcomm is going to ask "If he wants to jump ship at his/her current med school, what will make him stay with us?"
Need more info.
Advice...stick it out where you are...remember everybody that graduate from medical school is called a doctor!

Maybe this person was sexually harassed by a dean or professor at his/her current school, and he/she took the school to civil court. The settlement could be a full ride at the institution of his/her choice, and the story (along with guaranteed, up-front tuition & fee payment) would compel many schools to accept said person, given the psychological need of the harassed student to be at another school.

oh wait...just saw that the person said the event was "not related to me personally," which probably means my theory is not the correct answer

Haha! Nah, i think you're just psychic. You saw what the post was going to be before it was even thinking about being typed out. So you quoted it, and sure enough the original post came later!
