Hi Guys,
I'm a little scared and a little excited. I picked up a flyer at school that said free dental treatment in California. I called the number, and the lady said she was a dental student trained in China, and worked there for 5 years. She currently lives in Toronto, Canada (where I live), and wants to practice in California. According to her, she took the first three exams in Toronto, and passed. Now she has to take the fourth one in LA. She wants to fly in 3 patients to LA for the test, since she has to bring her own patients for the exam. Anyways, she is going to be paying for my plane trip to LA plus accomodation (after she does an x-ray to see if I have cavities). Do you think this story is fishy? Is someone trying to Kidnapp me? I'd love a free trip to LA, but I wanted to sound this out first. Does anyone know the procedure for liscensing in California. I have no clue (I'm from the pre-medical forum). Any input will be appreciated.

That's how licensing in CA works, yes... The candidate has to take a clinical exam with live patients in CA, and sometimes that entails flying one's patients in and putting them up in a motel for the duration of the exam.

Several of my classmates will be taking the CA boards in June this year and that's exactly what they are going to do.

I thought they were getting rid of live patient portions of the licensure exams?

Thank you so so much that was helpful. I guess i got myself a free trip to LA. Yay!!

Hey, but don't go blaming us when you wake up in a tub full of ice, poorly sutured wounds on your abdomen and a note that says "call 911 - your kidneys have been removed for sale on the blackmarket." The SDN community assumes no liability for the lifetime of dialysis treatments you will have to undergo as a result of your naivete. 😉

Just kidding, as bizarre as it is for dental students to have to do this year after year, it's all very legit. Provided of course, you have the specific dental problems she needs for her exam.
