Hi!

My school recently sent an e-mail about a website called Coursera that offers free classes to the public in a wide variety of subjects, so I decided to check it out. Turns out there are quite a few veterinary medicine related classes available. I'm signed up for one on Canine Theriogenology and another on Equine Nutrition. The classes consist of some combination of short video lectures, quizzes, and sometimes case studies. You have to complete the entire class in a several week time span (this varies for each class) but the workload is definitely manageable and the information is interesting. So if you're like me and did not take too many animal related science courses in undergrad and are itching to keep the gears in your mind turning over the summer, I would suggest enrolling in a course 🙂 If everyone already knows about this website, I'm sorry! I am late to the party.

The Equine Nutrition one is through the vet school I am at, same prof, same course.... 😴

You will learn lots about the DM content of different feeds... oh she loves sugar beet nuts, flakes, etc... be sure to MIX them with water though for the horse. 🙂

YES!! Thank you. I'm so doing this. I have zero background in any kind of animal nutrition, so I'm eager to learn.

Anyone else gonna go for this?

Considering canine therio. I'm always up for repro learning. 😍

Nutrition will just make me 😴.

🙁 I hear that a lot from people...Makes me think I'll feel the same way too.

But what I've also heard is that in some schools, instruction on any kind of animal nutrition is fairly minimal--and that's a little disappointing. Some of the vets at my SA clinic admit that they just aren't able to thoroughly address a few of the nutrition-related questions they get because of their minimal background on the subject. Even if it's not fascinating material, I think it's important to be pretty familiar with it--particularly with regards to horse nutrition. Yay? Nay?

I took a 3000 level animal nutrition course in UG, so I'm just speaking from experience. I think it's important to know, but it really depends on what you're wanting to do. If you're not an equine person, I wouldn't recommend it.

I would be interested to know more in the area of SA nutrition as my nutrition class was really just large animals. Much of SA nutrition is knowing the products too though, I believe.

Thanks for Posting!

I love Coursera! I'm currently working and have a gap year before I start school again in January and taking these courses keeps my mind running for a bit. Best of all, its FREE! I know that some courses (very few but expanding) offer college credits rather than a certificate of completion.

I actually took the Equine nutrition course which ended month or two ago. It's a fairly interesting course with awesome professors. You can post and meet on the discussion forums with various people around the world. There are quizzes and a final for you to take. After passing, I believe 65% or higher (I could be off), you will get a certificate of completion. A little something to make you smile 🙂
I am also currently registered for the Canine course which will start this week. Hopefully, it goes just as well as the equine course.

Signed up for the canine therio course for the hell of it. My background is equine/bovine therio so this will be a nice basic intro to SA, I think.

I'm also hoping this will slow down my WW obsession a wee bit. :meanie:

I have been signed up for the Canine Therio class for a while, so excited!! Just got an email about it today 🙂 I LOVE Therio!

I kind of want to do the Canine Therio too, but I'm worried that since it starts like now, it might be too much since I'm entering finals. =(

I'm the odd one out I LOVE nutrition I've taken General Animal Nutrition, Equine Nutrition and Food Animal Nutition aka every animal nutrition course Florida offers. 😀

you can still sign up for it, there isn't a set due date for anything, you just can't access anything once the class is "over." You don't have to start until after finals 🙂

odd question as this isn't a IT forum, but I can't get it to come up. Is it possible that it isn't compatiable with internet explore or something like that?

Therio class opens today!! super pumped! I totally started a SDN study group thread, y'all should all join in 😀

I would try a different browser. Chrome worked for me. You might also just need to update. When in doubt, check for updates and reboot. 🙂

Where is this? I can't find it.

Go to the discussion tab on the left side of the page, then there will be a introduction tab and study group tab. It's in the study group tab 😀

Thanks for the info! I totally signed up for both courses :]

I'm all signed up for Therio as well. I'm super excited!

There are a LOT of courses I want to take!
*must resist, do not have the time*

so I just finished all of week 1..... is it just me, or is this material very very basic.. I know it is just week 1 but those lectures were easy!

I've totally signed up for both the Therio and the Equine Nutrition classes! I've started that Week 1 stuff and I agree, it is basic, but most of the students are breeders who aren't looking for a full semester of Therio like you would get in vet school.

Finished week 1 as well. I'm completely new it all of it and it's quite interesting already.
I've been wanting to learn the pros & cons of spaying/neutering and the repro system for a club I'm starting on campus 🙂
