What's up -

Has anyone here rotated through Freeman Health Center in Joplin Missouri? I'm just wondering what your impressions of the site are?

Also, does anyone know anything about the internship/residency programs there?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave--
I have heard Joplin is an awesome experience. I have talked to a few upperclassmen, and they said the student:doctor ratio is almost always 1:1. They are getting ready to build a new $5 million+ dollar ER, will be like 5 floors or something crazy like that. As far as residencies, I know they have ER and ENT. That is all I know. I talked to them at our hospital day. I think four of my classmates are going there for rotations. It was my second choice. I plan on rotating there, doing an ER and an ENT.

Hope that helps

Do you know how many spots they have for UHS students every year? On a related note, how lucky do you have to get to match into Freeman for 3rd year?

I think there are roughly five spots. As far as luck goes, the way our school does third year choices is we all pick our top three spots and rank them 1,2,3. Then we get assigned a random number. Then a computer goes thru and selects numbers at random. One way they do this is that if it comes to your number and your first spot is open, you match there. If your first choice is full, then it goes to your third. if that is full you are "out" of the system. Then at the end, whatever is left over, those who didn't match, have to do it again. So they do this 100x. Then a second way they do it is instead of going from your first choice to your second, you get set aside and then the computer comes back to you later. Same process.

When this big cluster &^%$ is over, whichever way had the best percentage of matching, that is what we get. This year, we had like 92% people matched in their top three choices, so like only 12 people didnt match.

So for that, it is just luck of the draw. I know that is confusing, but that is how it does.
