Hi guys and girls, I am a freshman who wants to know the best way to prepare for the mcat. i know you can't much for the science part, but what about for the verbal reasoning? Also, what does EK mean?? If you guys can help me out I'd appreciate it.

EK means Exam Krackers. Its a popular series of mcat study materials.

I'm an undergrad so in the same boat as you. I'm getting prepared now and IMO EK books have looked great if you cant afford to take a prep course.

Best way is do good your science classes and when time comes, prep by doing lots of practice problems. As for me, I'm using Examkracker for Physics and Chemistry. For verbal, I will get there 101 verbal passages and have been reading stuff like The Atlantic. Anyways, you have lots of time before MCAT. Enjoy college before stressing out about MCAT. 🙂

Worry about it next year. The earliest you should take it is the summer after your sophomore year. Just take the prereqs.

I agree. Just do well in your classes this year. Don't waste your time preparing for the MCAT at this point. When taking science classes try to really understand the concepts. The MCAT is a lot different than science class but if you have a strong grasp of the fundamentals the MCAT will be easier. The other thing I recommend is read lots. Read stuff like the NY Times, read good books. Most of the MCAT is understanding and applying stuff you read, so be a good reader.

Verbal prep can be hard, but one of the better departments for preparing you to quickly take apart and understand a one to two page densely written essay is philosophy. I actually took not philosophy as an undergrad, but when friends of mine who did looked at the verbal practice problems I was struggling through, they were able to reason out the correct answer with apparent ease. Try taking an intro philosophy course that has a lot of reading and analytical writing (modern philosophy recommended, ancient philosophy classes are sometimes just history classes and do less analysis supposedly). Also, at least in theory, any class that requires you to analyse what you read, and to write well, should help the verbal and writting sections.

whooaaaa. its way too early for you to be stressing out about this. If you start stressing now, you are gonna have a first hand experience w/ doctors in the ER from a heart attack. The pressure was immense for me and i only worried about it for 3 months. As for verbal, Kaplan is suck. that is all
