What GPA would you think most allopathic med students finished with by the end of frosh year of college? Of course you have to take into account those who drastically improved, but
I'm talking about the students who knew what they were doing by first semester frosh year.

Lol I was jk. Anywhere between a 3.5 and a 4 is still good for freshman GPA in my opinion. It can be brought up pretty easily.

You are on sdn, this is not a good representation of the pre-med population.

Try to stay above a 3.0. Like GeorgiadisMD said, a 3.5 - 4.0 would definitely be considered a good freshman GPA. But don't worry too much if you struggle your first year. You have plenty of time to bring it up.

Is it possible to get it back up to a 4.0? Not quite sure how GPA works.

My freshman GPA was 1.37. No joke. I took 7 years off, started over and just got accepted to an allopathic school.

Moral of the story, don't be like me. Keep your GPA up. If you've already screwed the pooch, take some time, get some perspective and try again.

j/k of course 😛

didn't know there were any colleges that offered them.

(Just because you're a new yorker, I'll mention this), CUNY Hunter (and I think a few other CUNY's too) have A+'s. But as has been mentioned, they still count as a 4.0

First semester I had a 3.5, second semester was a 3.2... went up after that. Do yourself a favor and start off on the right track. Playing catchup/banking on a great MCAT or extracurriculars to buffer your ****ty GPA sucks.

With that said... still enjoy freshman year!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to end my freshman year with a not so stellar sub-3.5. I've been getting nothing but A-'s/B's

I'm just scared to death of Ochem and physics. Gen chem and bio have been easy but i don't see my GPA going anywhere but down

I think I'm gonna make a 4.0 by the end of this year but Ochem and such will surely drop that. who knows though.

Some people struggle with ochem and others thrive. I ended up with a B /B+ in gen chem 1&2 then was in the top 5 students out of a class of 400+ in orgo both semesters. I ended up going for my minor in chem because of it. Everybody talks it up a bunch, but its really not that terrible!

Feeling like I'll be diving in Physics next semester though. #mathproblems

quick word of advise: do NOT tell your professors (or other students for that matter) that you intend to go to medical school. At my current school it feels like a lot of the professors have some sort of personal vendetta against pre-meds and make it especially difficult for them to get good grades. For example I answered a particular question the same exact way as some non-preprofessional student, they got full credit and I only got half. My teacher's rationale was this: as a pre-med I should have given a more detailed answer. When I complained she threatened to lower my grade...wtf? I'm definitely transfering next semester.

Wow, Neurosis. I'm so sorry. What school do you go to if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah I know what you mean. On the other hand, if you go to a school which is filled mostly with unmotivated idiots, like I do, then it is refreshing to see someone REALLLLY passionate, and you want to do everything you can to make that person succeed. So it goes both ways. Within each school you should be mindful of your mouth.

As for that professor, I would :beat: that stupid horse. I'm sorry you have to deal with that man. I always feel pity for my fellow pre-meds who undergo crazy discrimination like that.

as of now, a small, private, liberal arts school in NY. Transferring to a SUNY school next fall though, so happy 🙂

If you feel like you're going to nab a 4.0, that's awesome! The higher your GPA is in the beginning, the better off you'll be in the long run.
