And? Gen Surg is not really a competitive field, and lots of DOs match it every year (even though there is about 50% success for ACGME). I thought you were going to say something unique like your friend matched into a top tier surgery program, which would have been interesting. But a lot of people like your friend match into low tier and community surgery each year...

Maybe we should all start posting about our friends who matched? It will be a great use of forum space.

Uh maybe because doing so with only COMLEX is pretty unique? You are literally the worst person on SDN.

Hey OP, any chance you know more about their application/what they did to pull this off? Or maybe even any chance they could come do an AMA on this thread? Would be interesting to find out more

    Congrats to them as well!

SDN is something else. Just the other day I saw a forum about the doom day of DOs matching gen surg. Today I see this and all of the sudden “it’s not a big deal”. This site never fails to entertain.

That is true but... posts like this do nothing but perpetuate myths. For example, OP said nothing about any connections, research pedigree, etc. Now we will see posts saying "you can match general surgery with only COMLEX."

The point being made is that there is always a crap ton of extra information excluded from these posts, and these posts do nothing but make premeds think you can easily match ACGME surgery with COMLEX.

Probably, that is what I was thinking when I saw "comlex only". Or it is other factors that won't be disclosed here.

Hey man I really knew it was possible, as a dog, to become an ACGME derm resident with only COMLEX. Even though we don't know anything about this dog's veterinarian or his owner or connections within Meow Mix Cat Food (which is historically a cat-only program, and looks down upon dogs), SDN has given hope to all the dogs applying for ACGME derm.

And this is an issue for you because?

I don’t think this thread reads like anything was “easy”, more like “hey this stuff happens sometime” maybe there’s an implication it may happen more in the future (which may well end up being true).

Right. A random person posted on SDN that his friend matched into general surgery with only COMLEX, and this carries the implication that all DOs will have an easier time matching into general surgery in the future. That makes a lot of sense.

But let's return to planet Earth for a second so that we can recognize the true pointlessness of the original post. Everybody on SDN already knows that plenty of DOs are able to match into general surgery; that's not news to anybody. So what new information has OP offered us? He offers us a valuable factoid: that he happens to be friends with one of those fortunate DOs. Neat!

My advice is to not take other people’s posts so personally. It’s not like there’s been any harm done my the OP’s post; so why even exert the energy to rail against it?

Because contextless, N=1 success stories can serve to mislead desperate people and give them false hope. Contrary to what OP said, people shouldn't feel hopeful solely on the basis of a vague, one-sentence anecdote from a stranger on the internet.

And to rational people, these kinds of posts just serve as spam. We already know that some DOs match into general surgery, and we already know that at least some of these DOs have friends. We may as well see forum posts describing the color of the sky or enumerating the letters of the English alphabet.

The issue is that this thread serves no purpose, and has no useful information for anyone. This thread does not serve as a useful predictor of how surgery PDs view or will view the COMLEX. This is a prime example of what I mean when I keep saying "incomplete SDN anecdotes".

So, I’ve got two more questions before you go on ignore Osminog, and I’d like you to answer them for the group.

What is so wrong with hope?

And if these posts are spam to “rational people”, why do you even care? Why not just ignore them?

The real question is whats the issue... had a bad day or what? I see no issue with this post and actually found it to be inspiring. But guess what I also know and I think most everyone knows that the described scenario is not the norm. Just cause you don't find the post informative doesn't mean its useless. Its called an opinion

Oh yeah but I did find your posts to be useless and not the least bit tasteful. Matter of fact I would describe your posts in this thread as spam.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with hope. I just think people should have reasonable expectations that are informed by data from representative samples, not by anecdotes from strangers.

Because these sorts of posts take up space and fail to serve the underlying purpose of this forum.

    lol

If anyone is using a single SDN anecdote for the basis of their expectations of matching then they don't deserve to match. No one is doing that at all. However, the posts that really takes up space and fail to serve the underlying purpose of this forum are the posts from people that come to **** post on other people's accomplishments. Especially pre-meds, or people who just a month ago were yelling from the roof tops how hard it is for DOs to ever match general surgery but now they come in here and scoff at how lots of DOs match general surgery and who cares that someone did it and is excited about it.

You mean like the myth that some how having "connections with top dogs" will miraculous take down non-LCME filters and get interviews at MGH while having the DO initials. It sounds like someone familiar

Its not like we are all going to draw some random conclusion like having a COMLEX score is enough. We are just excited another DO matching into the ACGME world. The vast majority of us know the game.

I didn’t find the post useless at all. Even if they were posting about their friend matching into AOA FM in BFE. I just like seeing people excited to have matched. Brings a breath of fresh air into the threads. Can’t always be doom and gloom here. It’s not healthy to live life like that.

Nobody's saying the "glass ceiling" is broken and there's going to be a floodgate of DO surgeons, but a DO matching ACGME General Surgery is kind of a big deal. Connections or no connections. Congrats OP's friend!

I have classmates (from my "mid-tier" DO school) who have matched ACGME radiology, anesthesia, gen surg and EM plus IM, FM, peds, and psych. I don't know if any of them had "connections" and obviously none of them know where they're going yet, but so far just about everybody is happy and it's a joy to see. Things don't have to be sentinel events to be a pleasant break from the doom and gloom on this site.

Actually, it is a fact that connections in the medical world get you into programs that otherwise would never have taken you. That is maybe what actually happened in the case of the person OP is talking about, or the program was a former AOA program.

Not sure what purpose your comment is serving, other than being a misplaced ad hominem. The point we are making is that this thread is utterly useless and has no useful information whatsoever.

How about a little data, at from one school (and one that I don't have a high opinion of, yet).
    Nova: 2017 match
    General Surgery - 5 placements
Kennedy University Hospital/Our Lady of Stratford NJ
Hackensack University Medical Center - Palisades North Bergen NJ
Beaumont Health System Royal Oak MI
Kendall Regional Medical Center Miami FL
Medical University of South Carolina Charleston SC

There were two others in the Mil Match

I don't know which ones are AOA vs ACGME programs, but as rule of thumb, to my layman's eyes, I see two of these are University programs (as compared to community hospitals)

Now yes, reading match lists is like reading tea leaves, and we'll need our wise surgical colleagues to let us know how these programs really stack up in the eyes of the experts (meaning: surgeons). But it is still eye opening for me in that in a single year, Nova gets five people into Gen Surg, when my school has only sent maybe 30 into the field in all the time I've been teaching! Must be something about surgery.

    Morale of the story:
    DOs can get into surgery.
Will it be at Mass Gen? No.
Is it uncommon? Yes, but these aren't at the level of Lotto winners.

Actually very well placed. The point your getting at is that connections can help you match into "some" programs that would have never considered you. However, it doesn't take down"most or all" barriers. Yet, one could also misinterpret it as the latter if they didn't understand your point.

The Beaumont Royal Oak match is also pretty impressive from what my surgical friends tell me. That is Oakland Beaumont's true home program apparently.

Gen Surg is moderately competitive. I have plenty of MD friends over the years that failed to ever obtain a position despite decent scores.

Honestly, this is my major complaint with SDN. The endless negativity, vitriol, cynicism and bitterness that are regularly seen across many forums are frustrating and tiring to read. When someone posts good news, we should congratulate them on their success and not selfishly use this as an opportunity to put down colleagues and undermine their accomplishments.

SDN gets a bad name because people on here are judgmental, brutal and condescending to one another. We are stuck in this vicious circle of hypercompetitiveness/neuroticism and are so used to negativity that even good news should be criticized to the most finest extent. That needs to stop.

Its literally what you are doing now. Taking a statement about a surgery ACMGE match with a COMLEX and making assumptions about it. We have no idea if this person did extra research or made connections. Heck, they may have even matched with just a COMLEX score. Does it really bug you that there are people who have done this before?

He's not trying to shove a message down our throats by saying "just take the COMLEX." He's saying that even if you have a COMLEX score, it can be done. By the time we match, it will all be combined anyway. So if there are people who took just the COMLEX and mainly applied to AOA and a few AMCGE programs, they may match ACMGE.

You still need to max your competitiveness by taking the USMLE, having research, and still jumping through the hoops. However, it help to know this happens for people who are too far into medical school to check the boxes. They will still be wise to apply to mostly former AOA program also.

It happens all the time. Which is why “my best friend matched acgme gen surg” is a ridiculously pompous thread. There’s not even any context lol.

Much more harmful than the "endless negativity, vitriol, cynicism and bitterness" on SDN is the incessant virtue-signaling. ;)

Anyway, if OP were an established SDN member and his post read "My DO friend matched ACGME general surgery, and I'm really excited for him! Just wanted to share the good news!", then I guarantee you that there would be no negative responses.

OP's post says that DO students should be more excited and hopeful because OP's friend (whom we know absolutely nothing about) matched ACGME general surgery. I'm sorry, but this is completely different from "posting good news."
