Hey guys,

I am moving from AZ to PA and I have a feeling I'm gonna freeze my ass off. Any advice for a guy who wears flip flops 75% of the time and who is used to it raining only 15 times a year?

What kind of gear did you all find essential?

You are gonna freeze your ass off...wait until you get there to buy the winter gear because chances are that the stuff they sell in Arizona isn't warm enough.

I went from Cali to Boston and these are some things you must have:

GLOVES (must cost at least $25-40 to be warm enough - leather with lining preferably)
COAT (again price range $100-200)
HATS (like skullcaps, etc. - these are cheap)
SCARF (heavy wool - not mandatory but I liked covering my face with it when the temperature dropped below 20 degrees)
BOOTS - for snow

It's great being back in Cali now that I graduated because I am a flip flops type myself. I had a "rule" in Boston - I would only break out the flip flops if the weather was above 50 degrees. People will look at you strangely when you wear these...but there were other Cali people who did it.

Also - most stuff you buy for the first two casual years when you don't see patients should have "hoodies"

The areas of your body that will get coldest are probably your hands, ears, and face...so keep 'em covered.

wait till you feel humid heat

What you really need? Money, money, money. Lots of things that you can do for free on the West coast often cost money on the East coast.

what kind of things are u talking about?

Ever heard of a turnpike? Its like a toll bridge except there is no bridge. Coming from the West coast, land of the open road, I am not a huge fan of a stretch of highway that costs me money each time I drive it.

Amen! Though my move from the west to the east coast was not to Philly but to Orlando where the summer humidity is around 95%. I moved up to Philly last August only to have dismayed natives tell me I was crazy when I said that the 40% up here felt like a vacation from where I had come. It's still gross, don't get me wrong, but it could be worse.

As far as cold weather gear, hoodies are great. 👍 Scarves and gloves are also a must, at least if you value your digits and neck.

Parking, toll roads (they're everywhere and often a necessary evil), parking tickets, so on and so forth. The east, in my experience, is a bit more costly to live and get around in than the west.

Just bring a dishtowel. Use it as a loincloth. Everything else you need will be provided by strangers enchanted by the friendly man in the loincloth. Embark!

bring a paddle to b!tch slap anyone that makes fun of you for saying the words "awesome" and "gnarly" or when they mis-pronounce words such as water (they say it like woot-ah, but maybe that's just a new york thing).

also, buy the biggest scraper you can find for your car. my parents got me this one for graduation and the scraper blade was probably about 4 inches wide and i thought i was hardcore. then when i got here i saw people with scrapers that were like a foot wide or bigger. needless to say it made me feel like a pansy with my little scraper standing in the snow

DMD2005 is right on the list of what you will need and that you should wait and bye it there. On the type of coat you should get, you NEED a big Down (or Down like jacket) For when it is cold outside they crank the heat up to high. So Make it a One layer fast on fast off for the temp change. And like others said they make you pay for things you are not used to paying for. Oh, and they have some pretty weird ways of saying things. Don't try and order a "pop" they will just look at you funny. You are going to the land of "soda". Good luck
