Hey guys, first I'd like to say that I did check the search feature and there really wasen't a thread relating to this sort of situation so I'd figure to make a new one. Anyway, I'm a junior in high school now and this means college visits and the such. So, wanting to be a successful pre-med student what would I benefit the most from?

Why part-time - part-time student with a part-time job (I feel like I'd be living on instant noodles when I become a med student since I won't balance a job). More money in my pocket, less time on the books though.

Why full-time - More work, More study, more credits.

I ultimately ask this now so I can think it over because really I don't know if I should be part-time and full-time. I feel like most if not all pre-med students are full-time. So again I ask, what do you guys think I'd benefit the most from and why?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Grrr I made an annoying typo in my title *pre-med.

Think of the year or two of earning potential you would give up trying to save more money now.

Full-time all the way.

Pre-EMD? like emergency medical dispatcher? Just kidding man

Full time 100%, don't get caught up in the whole part time deal. You usually wont be able to live in a dorm part time, which will hurt your social life. Part time students enter a whole different realm of loans, I'm not too too familiar with it, but I think you have to pay student loans monthly if you take less than X credits or something like that .. but I could be wrong.

Just go straight through, no need to extend your UG time from 4 years to 7. The amount you will make working PT at walgreens will be nothing compared to 3 years lost as a physician salary.

Thanks guys!

To Fed - Well, I'm not thinking about dorming anyway if I get into Hofstra which lives like 20 minutes away from me but I never knew that there were different loans and that my undergrad years would be extended. You do put up a good point, thanks!

Full-time it is, then!

1. Apply broadly to college. If you get a scholarship, then you may need little to no loans in undergrad.
2. Go full time. Get on your feet, get used to college life. If you feel like you can handle it, then look into getting a part time job. In college, I was a tutor. I also had a clinical research job that looked good on med school apps and paid the bills.
3. You won't need to live on noodles in med school. Or at least I didn't get that memo. Just budget wisely.

On top of this I will add:
1b. Go to the cheapest (incl. financial aid GRANTS and SCHOLARSHIPS) school you get accepted to

Med schools, by and large, do not care if you went to HYPSM or PodunkU as long as you did well. You don't want another loan on top of what will be a 200k interest-accrued (since the sub'd Stafford is going away fro GME) loan.
