Well...just had to vent!!! I want to quit!!!!!!

Im a non-trad student. Right now Im trying to finish up my undergrad in int'l business. My plan was to cont. into medical school. I switched over to working part time and going to school full time this semester to dedicate more time to my studies. But...I have never worked part time and its hard on me. (living alone) I like it but not used to it. At times I just fell like ending it with my undergrad.

My past history...i've been in school for 5 years now. Im a jr right now and I just need chem and physics for my prereq. for medical school. My gpa has suffered mainly due to work. I was a computer programmer which required me to work a lot of hours and you can see it with in gpa.

I just feel like I might not get accepted into medical school! But then at times I just feel really motivated that I beleive it can do it!!! Right now at this moment...I feel like going into a PA program rather!!! But I know I want be a doctor not a PA. Im really fustrated! I don't know what Im asking for...just wanted to tell everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😕 😕 😡

Well I'm not a non-trad but I was a PA major at one point as well. This issue with that is that I want recognisition for my treatment. That is what I see that most PA's don't get. PA's are great, don't get me wrong. But, I say stick it out my friend and apply to medschool. If that doesn't work out then consider PA.

I'm sure the DO adcoms will look at your situation and hopefully it shouldn't be an issue. Rock the MCAT.

I almost went to law school. Some people think I still should. However, after doing some work in a hospital I realized I really enjoy it.

I think most premeds go through the, "Should I do something else" stage. Be glad you're fortunate enough to do it now than in med school.

Hey no problem. We all need some support now and then. I really screwed up as an undergrad...immaturity, life problems, etc. etc. However, it was in the end, my fault. Here are my undergraduate grades if you care to look at them....

A C in organic chem! A C in cell biology! A C- in calculus! A B- in biochem! And a C+ in human sexuality!!

Now I am enrolled in a masters program that entails taking 2 semesters of physiology, 2 semesters of biochemistry, and a semester of cell biology....I am trying to offset my undergrad 3.2/3.1 with these courses. I also got a 25 on the MCAT when I took a few years ago. I hope to take it again and get a 30+ on the sucker in April 2006!

Sometimes I feel like I have a chance and sometimes I feel like there is no way in hell that I am getting in. I sometimes hear of those getting in with a 3.5 and sometimes those who have a 3.6 don't get in. However, sometimes I hear of a guy who has a 3.4 and a 24 on the MCAT who has an interview at my state school (MD)....

Who knows? I think if you work hard, do well on the remainder of your classes, and let them know that you are reforming, that you really want to be a doc, I think you will get in somewhere!

Keep your chin up man...if you ever need a support system, you can count on me...just look at my MEDIOCRE grades! I hope I can make up for them with this years work and maybe get in somewhere! Good luck to you my man!

Hang in there; this is a marathon not a sprint. I remember having those similar feelings and I was a non-trad applicant too. The worse part for me was the uncertainty because, hey everything you do to get into medical school is an investment and you are worried if it will pay off. The only thing I can say is that you should try and enjoy the journey, everything you do well or bad has value. Hopefully if you make a mistake you won’t have to make it again since you already saw that “well that sucked” and if you can express that to an ad-com my bet is on you.
One of the things I did along my journey was to keep trying to improve my application without ever sending it. Years and years went by before I felt ready enough and I never really felt ready to apply! At some point you just have to go for it, better sooner than later.
Good luck

Thanks for the replies! It makes me feel a lot better reading these post.

When I start getting "unmotivated" I try to read medical articles, come to this site or talk to my friend (he's R3) about medical things and that usally motivates me once again. Although lately it has been harder mainly cause Im really close to finishing my undergrad and I know I can get a good job in this area but its not what I want to do! I like it but my passion is medicine!

Y'all have motivated me once again to continue with my studies and eventually becoming a doctor!

Thanks a lot! Its nice to hear posts like these. Makes me feel better.

I originally was going to be a PA, but then decided I wanted to go for the 4+ year program ( and that's after my personal 6 year undergrad program). I too, wondered if I could possibly get in after a ridiculously bad start, and even had a lab coordinator say to me that it was ridiculous that so many students were pre-med b/c almost none of them would make it. Pretty depressing, but I busted my ace for 2 years in a post-bacc., and got in for 2006 after being rejected in '05.

Everybody has their own route. I guess what I am trying to say is that you can definitely do it. If others try to tell you otherwise just say, "yeah, you're probably right", then quietly and confidently prove them wrong! 😎

Hang on and don't get discouraged. I'm really a non-trad student. I am married with one child, I'm 29 years of age and it took me forever to graduate college because I worked full-time through undergrad. My grades were pretty good (3.63) and I studied my butt off for the MCAT and I completely bombed it +pity+ . I was so discouraged by the news and having a family, a good job (licensed Medical Technologist), and being 29, I was under extreme pressure to move on and do something else with my life. So I did, I started my masters degree and was content with just giving up and doing something else. But eventually I ignored all of that pressure and crap, re-took the MCAT :barf:, and re-applied. All or nothing so I applied to a million schools (12 DO and 20 MD) and the response has been unbelievable. I received secondaries from every school, invited to 16 interviews (so far), went to 11 of the 16 (so far) and have been accepted into every school I have interviewed at (so far) (MD and DO but probably going DO). All of this is great and all but the main point is this; I never gave up and next year, I WILL put on that white coat and I WILL be a doctor. All of those who doubted me and pressured me to go other ways can kiss my a$$. Don't give up, if you really want it, you too will be a wonderful doctor someday. 👍
Best of luck and God bless to all of y'all!!! :horns:

Nice Jbone!
We all get discouraged, just hang in there. A good MCAT will offset poor grades. Like Jbone, I'm a medical technologist. I was working and having kids all through school, and I ended up having several C's and a D+. I did well on the MCAT, though, and it helped offset some of my lower grades. I've been accepted to every school I applied to. Just remember why you want to do this!

Daddydoc, you're a med tech?? That's sweet 👍 . I'm a med tech at Primary Children's Medical Center in SLC. How about you?

I wouldn't announce that I got a C in sex, if I were you.

This is good advice. It is NOT worth it to work 40+ hrs/week just to avoid student loans. I made this mistake and will always regret it. I spend TEN YEARS completing a BS while working fulltime, living alone, etc etc....everyone knows what this is like. I should have just taken out loans and completed my degree as quickly as possible. You must must look into this. A lot of schools have cheap/free on-campus day-care for kids so you might be able to save some money that way.

Take out student loans work as few hours as possible and focus on your schoolwork. Get enough loans so that you won't be constantly worried about finances. Working part-time is weird, eventually you'll get used to it. Just remember that you don't want to be a programmer or a PA. You want to be a doctor.

It'll get better. Good luck!
