For those who went through the HPSP program did you just live off of the monthly pay or did you get a loan to help with living expenses??? If so about how much did you go into dept by taking loans???

In addition to HPSP, I borrowed $20K per year to help pay living expenses, had a family and lived in a high cost area.

In addition to HPSP funds, I borrowed about $35k during med school. I lived pretty comfortably and was able to take some nice vacations. Honestly, if you can get subsidized student loans you should get them. No interest accrues until the loan goes into repayment. Even then, the interest rate is likely to be less than your return if you choose to invest the money.
