Dear all,
I have been reading quite a lot about the latest trends towards evidence based practice in psychotherapy and the implications for the professions of clincal and counselling psychologists.
The trends seem to suggest:
i) Only clearly and empirically evidenced psychotherapy practice will be covered by insurers in the US
ii) Manualised treatments seem (at present) more 'compatible' with randomized clinical control trial studies which are the 'favourite' way.
iii) Increasing competition in the future stemming from preference for manualised treatment delivered by MSW / LCW etc.
iv) Nicolas Cummings has even suggested that clinical psychologists might stop practicing psychotherapy.
The following article fro the American Journal of Psychotherapy is very pertinent and worth reading: Thomason, Timothy C. (2010), 'Trend toward evidence-based practice and the future of psychotherapy', American Journal of Psychotherapy, Jan Issue.
