I was wondering if anyone here has any info. on the future of dental practice. I have been looking into dentistry and few of the things that really interest me are the autonomy, hours, a great solid, secure career and salary. I have been told by some people who are in the business field and have done some research on the future of dentistry that the "cushion" of the field is soon going to change in the next 5-10 years or so. They were specifically talking about the overall managed care situation. Since more companies are offering dental insurance to patients, etc. it might soon become similar to medicine. Just wondering what you all think about that and if you have heard similar future predictions.

Dentistry is less open to the horrors experienced by physicians for several reasons.

1: For employers, dental benefit insurance costs are much less expensive and far more stable than medical benefit insurance costs.

2: Dental group practices tend to experience a high turn over rate amongst their DDS/DMD staffs.

3: More and more dental group practice plans are beginning to drop the use of orthodontics as a loss leader. Employees typically have the choice at work each year of choosing a dental group practice plan or traditional plan for their dental insurance. Well, in the past, employess tended to sign up for the group plan just long enough to take advantage of the low cost orthodontics and then they would switch to a traditional plan ASAP afterwards. Group practices are beginning to catch on to the fatal flaw inherent in their loss leader orthodontic statedgy to gain market share.

4: People are living much longer lives and becomming more sophisticated about the health and quality of life advantages to be gained by keeping their teeth in good working order over their life spans thru good oral hygiene and regular dental care.

5: One cloud on the horizon might be the global economy. For example, there are stories out there about folks who vacation to Mexico and get dental work done at the same time. The claim is that the savings incurred by having the work done in Mexico vs the USA "pays for the vacation." I don't know, but I suspect that there are some false economics underlying such claims.

All in all, I would say that this is the best time ever to make an investment in getting a DDS/DMD degree.

They've been saying this for years. Just like they are going to have a caries vaccine right around the corner.......................

If it sounds like what you want to do, do it. It will be okay.

I get to retreat all of that Mexico work, and by and large most of it is completely terrible. I cannot believe the terrible RCTs I've seen (5-6mm short on a 15mm canal?), posts placed that have perfed through the root, ridiculously open crown margins, etc.

Granted ALL of the work can't be that poor, but much of it is.

Prosthodontic specialty is excellent.

Perio ist die Zukunft der Zahnheilkunde! Zeig heil!

You're making all the Jews on this forum very nervous :scared: :scared:

Thanks you much. I will try for attempt to post frequently in English. Present English is not excellent, but am practising.

If you the perioGOD, I will be your subject wearning woody. We can also enslave dirty Mexicancho Esclavo. I have nipple clamps, considering purchasing whippies and chainies.

What is up with scrotty and perioboy getting together? Are they in cahoots with each other? Is this the "fourth reich" we're seeing come before our very eyes? I think I'm going to be alerting the courts in Nuremburg.... A perio "fringe" group has recruited scrotty as the new leader... they see a future "superior race" of "long teethed" individuals with 1-3 month recalls and a whole mouth full of furcation involvements and class 2-3 mobility....the rest of us are in trouble....
