What do people think about the future of pocket books in the OR? It seems a bunch of people are carrying something with them. It appears there are no good apps (yet) for anesthesia. Are pocket books the new wave? If so, which ones do u carry?

every major textbook is available in either pdf or chm format, for those who are willing to look and those who are ethically casual. ipad (or iphone) = new pocket book

if you're that paranoid (or those in the OR around you are that paranoid), then exception may be taken to reading a book as well.

if you just like having a physical book, you can check out Pocket Anesthesia, Mass General Handbook for Anesthesia Procedures, or pocket Barash. They may not actually fit in your pocket, but they're small enough to easily carry around.

that may be true, but what if ipads and cell phones are not allowed in your OR? I mean everyone assumes u r cruising the web or on facebook if u look at these things. But, i see no way they can ban small pocket books.

The answer is simple. A clear policy banning the access of non clinically relevant material in the OR/ward during times of patient care. Banning specific technology from the OR just because it happens to be able to do other things as well is foolhardy and dangerous. If you knowingly violate the policy, that's on you. I look up clinically relevant material, journal articles, etc every day in the OR on my iPhone or iPad. I'm not cruising FB, etc. And before the nurses try to institute a ban on this stuff at my place, they need to block Facebook in the PACU. Hell will freeze over first. That virtual farm's not going to tend to itself you know!
Has someone from your group joined the committee making these policies yet? You need to get on that.
