A friend(50yo, type ii diabetes) had sudden onset of gastroparesis at the end of a course of antibiotics for h.pylori. The presence of food was demonstrated in two separate gastroscopies and was first blamed on non compliance with fasting. It resolved spontaneously after about a week.

I have a little theory about it. The macrolide in the h.pylori cocktail has a prokinetic effect and other antibiotics from that family are actually used to treat gastroparesis. Could the discontinuation be a trigger for gastroparesis?

The pro-kinetic antibiotic effect is transient.

More likely he has gastroparesis from his diabetes or post-infectious gastroparesis.
