Offservice rotations...I can tolerate them...even the suits at Mayo...cool for a short period of time. But no stinking ties in the ED. Nothing but a vector and a leash for the psych patient to take you for a walk.

There are no more off-service rotations in the Mayo EM cirriculum that require suit and ties. All are "scrubs" only.

So that's how to get the fireman's attention...just say Mayo and the apparatus starts rolling!! You not checking your PEM these days Dr. Backdraft, or do the chiros have you all worked up on the other thread??

In retrospect, I should have stated that like at Mayo, for non EM residents, the whole suit thing is still honored but for EM its not an issue. But like I said, I like the whole suit thing now and then. I figure I better get my moneys worth before I get too fat to wear them. I guess I can always squeeze into one for my depositions though heh? Happens to the best as we know. Hopefully it will be a long time until the suit gets broke out for that purpose if ever. But I can only hope that by then my current Ralph Lauren suit will look like a 70's leisure suit. My mom mad me wear one of those you know...bright yellow and green plaid...along with the bowl cut!!

I was a student at Hershey - they should have a good program, when I left it looked like they still had some kinks to work out like how traumas are run and such.

I will second the tie thing and tell you my girlfriend is from Danville. It's the hospital. PERIOD. The city has nothing else at all.
Hershey is pretty cool place though. Who wouldn't wanna live in chocolate town? Plus it's a little more convenient to a real city for a day trip (i.e. Philly or Bmore)

We no longer wear shirts/ties. We may wear scrubs (personalized top with matching bottom). We also have the option of wearing ties if we really must. We most recently had to wear the scrub top/khaki combo, which many do not like.

Apparently, visiting students have to wear a tie. 🙁

Wow, dcg3u, thanks for digging up such an old thread!!

I do, however, concur with dcg here. We no longer wear shirts/ties. We may wear scrubs (personalized top with matching bottom). We also have the option of wearing ties if we really must. We most recently had to wear the scrub top/khaki combo, which many do not like.

Either way, Geisinger is a nice place - plenty busy, and feeling the bed crunch everyone else is...

'had to wear'? they actually made you wear khakis? I mean as a hospital/program I can see them making you were certain scrubs or tie which are relatively ingrained in hospital attire, but scrub top/khaki is relatively new and I know many people that do not like to wear it, or see it on people haha.

I'm not one of those, I change it up, nice cloths, scrubs, khaki/scrub top combo, but i never wear ties, just too much unless you are an attending and dont get as dirty with ng tubes and other various 'dirty' procedures.

actually i think if i ever make it to attending/program director/someone in charge I'm gonna make all residents wear numbers on the back, kinda like sports/football. that way when we start the shift all i have to remember is numbers and tell everyone where to go...

16 go see the chest pain
24 go do the rectal exam
35 that guy needs the ng tube now

can't wait....

heck I might even draw out ER plays so I can just say "blue whale sarcoidosis" and eveyrone will know where to go.

Didn't house do that last season? He was calling them all by numbers, good times.

Students have to wear ties because the only other optional uniform is the nice scrub set for us. But our chief reads this thread and my guess is we can talk him into discussing this with our PD. Our PD is more than reasonable to take a new viewpoint on an issue when it is needed. I am with you though, as I think students should have some sort of other option. It's just that we do not allow the cheap hospital scrubs in the department and that is all a student would have access to. Perhaps we could pursue the idea of having some of the nice scrub tops on hand to "check out" to the students when they are visiting and then they would turn them in when they are done. Just an idea for the chief and the PD. They might have a better idea anyway.

No, we could wear shirt/tie combo or the scrubs/khaki combo.. those were our choices. They have seen the light, however, and are allowing us to wear all scrubs now

I agree, the scrubs/khakis looks somewhat silly, and I know that several of the inpatient services liked to poke fun at us behind our backs... maybe this will take that venue away from them. Now they'll have to go back to calling us glorified triage nurses! 😎

meh, let 'em wear ties... it may be their last chance until they get married 🙂
