Gen. Chem one along with Orgo one?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i did it so it can be done.

It's not completely necessary to have taken both General Chemistry I and II b/c the concepts are fairly different from that of Organic Chemistry. It doesn't hurt however, to have taken both General Chemistry courses before Organic to help succeed in the course. There are alot of basics that stem from General Chemistry. If you feel you can get passed all of that, then by all means it is certainly doable.

I think it's do-able. At my school, the second quarter of general chem. did cover a little bit of organic (mainly nomenclature, isomers, etc.), but I still think it's possible to take general chem. at the same time as organic. The only problem I can think of is that those are both tough/time-consuming classes.

It's doable but not recommended. In addition, many schools won't even permit it.

There are a couple of key things that are assumed when you start organic chemistry.

Do you know how to comfortably draw Lewis structures?

Do you understand the idea of hybridization?

Can you identify Lewis acids and bases?

Do you know what it means to have first or second order kinetics and do you have at least a basic understanding of kinetics?

This is just in a nutshell some of the very key concepts that are assumed in organic chemistry. I taught both college general chemistry and college organic chemistry between graduate school and the start of medical school. I would not allow a student to take orgo before completing general. As a matter of fact my university required that students have at least a C in both semesters of general before entering organic.

Just my opinion.

Stehanie's caveats notwithstanding, I found General and Organic to be almost completely distinct in terms of material and concepts. As a non-degree student you can probably take the courses in whatever order suits you, and IF you are intelligent and motivated, I expect you will have little difficulty taking them concurrently.

Good luck.

I also took gen chem 2 and ochem 1 the same semester and had no difficulties. I did have alot of chemistry in high school, so it wasn't like the gen chem 2 material was brand new to me. I also had to convince my advisor to let me do it though. Good luck.

Considering you took gen. chem I in the past, I don't think it would be a big deal. I actually took orgo I before taking gen. chem I, and didn't have any problems, although I may have had to work a little harder to learn some basic chemistry stuff. As someone pointed out, I also found the two courses to be very different from one another. Good luck!

I actually took Chem II (as a non-degree seeking student) at the same time as Orgo and did great in Orgo! You definitely have to put in alot of studying time, regardless if you finished Chem II. Go for it! I am now leading/teaching the seminar for Orgo.... and I received my Bachelor's in Fine Arts. Anything can be done if you work hard enough!
