General Questions from a Non-Trad Med Student WannaBe...
😎 Hey guys...how y'all doing? Fine I hope...

Well after reading and re-reading DRTP's original thread, I have decided to follow y'alls advice and re-adjust my timeline for applying to medical school...and i am happy and pretty sure that i made the right decision...however...that decision has lead to more questions...so...with that in mind...I begin...

Currently I have a BBA with a not so great cGPA, I am going to begin taking my Pre-Reqs in the Fall...my original plan which i have now re-adjusted, was to take my PRE-Req's and complete an AS; take the MCAT in late Aug; and try to get matriculated in 2010...however, since I am willing to do everything to ensure that I get accepted, I want to know what your thoughts are on the following...

🙄 1.
Do I just complete my pre-reqs and get a AS from my local Community College...

-OR-
Do I complete my pre-reqs, get an AS AND a Certificate in Cardiovascular Technology or Surgical Technology at the same local Community College...

-OR-

Do I work on getting a BS from my Alma Mater?

🙄 2.
I found this timeline for applying to med school at http://gradschool.about.com/od/medic...edtimeline.htm.

I think it would be a good idea to go through as many of these steps as possible without actually taking the mcat and applying, just to get an idea of the process, and to get a head start...what do y'all think about that?

🙄3.
Over the years, I have developed my own system for applying and getting a job that i am determined to get...and my system works pretty well for me...since it works for me, i was thinking about incorporating my personal job landing system into applying and getting myself into medical school...what are y'alls thoughts on that?

and finally...

🙄4.
Do Med School Admission Committees by any chance see 40 as the new 30? or not so much?

Thanks in advance for any comments or advice, positive or negative...

im not sure what all your acronyms stand for but from my experience...

1) if you already have a bachelors degree, there's no need to go back and get another one. just take the pre-reqs at your local college or community college. which ever you prefer. (and no, med schools dont really differentiate between community college and university...)

however, if you dont have a bachelors, then you want to get that.

the tech cert. sounds like a good idea but it all depends on how much time you really want to spend finishing off your pre-reqs. and even if you get it, i dont think itll make that big of a difference on your application.

2&3) for me, i took all my pre-reqs at community college. after that was done, i took preinceton. after that, i took an extra month to study more and then took the mcat. then i worked for 1 yr and while prepping my personal statement. then i applied.

this worked for me. what you choose to do is up to you.

4) i think a 40 would get you an interview (as long as your gpa isnt horrible) but i dont think it guarantees an acceptance.

good luck!

ok let me see...

DRTP = another SDN Member's name...i don't know what it stands for

BBA = Bachelor Business Administration
Major in CIS = Computer Information Systems

cGPA = cummulative Grade Point Average

AS = Associate's degree in Science

BS = Bachelor's degree in Science

I assume you know these...

MCAT = Medical College Admissions Test

Pre-Reqs = pre requisites....

I think that just about cover's them all, no?
