How many of you out there are still waiting for Georgetown SMP??? I'm a little annoy by this whole process. Dr. Myers kept saying contact Mrs. Cabiness for everything, but she never respond to me or any of my friends who are waiting right now.

Any former SMPs out there? Is this normal to wait this long? Will they offer many more acceptances close to orientation time?

i'm still waiting too... and equally annoyed with the process. my application was complete back in March, and i'm still on hold.

i've been in touch with Ms. Cabiness and continue to get the run around about my application. it has something to do with the fact that i'm on 3 WLs for med school this yr, and they don't want to give me a spot because i could still pick up and go to med school if i get in this year. but i'm not sure how long they're going to make me wait, seeing as how it IS mid-July and still, no word from med school. argh! 😕

if you're having a hard time getting in touch with Ms. Cabiness, you may want to try calling Gina Moses--she's very nice and easier to get in touch with. Look up her info on the Gtown on-line directory. (She's another administrator for the SMP program.)

as far as people getting in at this point in time, i know that they were accepting applications until June. there was an increase in applications to the SMP program this year. i know that they are still giving out acceptances, but the spots are dwindling. as of the beginning of July, i know a few people who were still getting in.

good luck with this... i share your frustration!

i was on the hold list last year and it seems that it never moves...good luck

where are you now? are you in the SMP program, or med school, or doing something else?
more info requested, please 🙂

Just finished the Drexel/MCP IMS program and in the process of applying for this year.

I too am on hold... got annoyed with waiting so I accepted an offer to attend the drexel/mcp IMS program. anyway, I think this program will be easier... although my chances of getting into Georgetown med is slimmer now.

PayingMyDues:

Is it true that the top 20% actually get accepted to GT or is it not that concrete? From what I've heard, connections really play a major role in getting admitted to their medschool after the SMP. Is this true?

What's the IMS Program?

Hi

I am not sure about the Georgetown program and its rates into medical school.

The drexel IMS program is very similar to the GT program...you take 1st year medical school classes through telecast NOT in the same classroom...and if you get B or better in ALL your classes..you get an interview to Drexel. About 30/110 kids get the B's or better and I would say that about 80% of those kids get into Drexel.

Based on my experience the program helps you get into Drexel. If you want to go to Drexel, its great...however if you have your hopes on other schools...well good luck....

Hi Ashkan,

I did the SMP this past year and wanted to try to answer some of your questions. Georgetown will interview the top half of the class very late in the cycle (end of March). Then they will hand out acceptances in about 3 different bunches after they see how well everyone did on the first neurobiology exam. They take about 20-25 people from the SMP. This past year we had about 130 students in our class. In this program you do take your 6 med classes with the Gtown med students. I noticed that a lot of people who were accepted to Gtown really made an effort talk to the professors in charge of the program as much as possible(ie kissed up). However, many students were accepted to other schools. I think many schools have a high regard for the Georgetown program. Hope this helps.

how did they "kiss up" and who did they "kiss up" to? (preparing my lips as we speak)

i will be contacting georgetown on monday to inform them that i will not be attending the program. i hope that my call will free up a seat for someone. good luck, guys!

Exmike,

Use your lips on Dr. Myers and Dr. Mulroney. Dr. Myers as you know is the head of the SMP and Dr. Mulroney is a co-chair I believe. She is also on the admissions committee...

Thanks! I shall start practicing my pucker this instant

shreebee,

I am seriously considering doing the SMP program next year. Having been through the whole experience, do you have any regrets or dislikes about the program? How are the SMP students treated by the actual GT med students, i.e. do the SMP students end up sitting together in the back corner, or does everybody interact with everybody? Were there any students that you thought should have been accepted to GT's med school who didn't get in, or were there any students who you thought shouldn't get in actually get in? Also, if you don't mind me asking, how did you do and did the program end up helping you?

I'd greatly appreciate your response. Thanks.

Hey guys,

I was also in the smp this past year. The wait may be long, but I can tell you that our class president for this year heard from the program 1 week before it started. But shhh....you didn't hear that from me. I'm not sure if that helps any of you for this year, but it should give you an idea of how swamped they are. I got in around July 3 (applied in April or May, I forgotten now -- hey it was a tough year, ok 😀).

Good luck, whether or not you end up in the smp.

Hey Bruin-

First of all, congrats on being done with the SMP program. It's a great accomplishment! My friend from Duke actually did it last year and said it's a pretty challenging program (short little indian girl, you may know her...). Anyhow, i had a quick question. I'll be a first year at Gtown med next month and was curious as to whether we take all the same classes as you guys. Do they just combine the nursing, SMP, and med students together in classes, including gross anatomy lab. If so, i think it's great that we get to work with people in the other schools.

So where are you now...are you applying to a med school this year or doing something else. Best of luck with your plans.

Hey Surfdevl02,

Yep, I know exactly who you're talking about! She would know me as the female half of "the cute couple" 😛.

Anyway, the nursing school is completely separate from the med school, so you'll hardly even see any of their students. But, smp students take six classes with the med students (embryology, microscopic anatomy/histology, physiology, endocrinology, neuro, and biostats). Med students took gross, biochem, genetics, and a few others separately from us, while we had four courses by ourselves (cmp which is a biochem course, immunology/microbiology, pathways, and integrative physiology -- plus a library research paper). As for me, I'm applying to med schools again (3 application services, 45 schools -- 😱 ).

Good luck for next year.

i had to add my 2 cents:

You forgot to add the 3rd part of the class, if i was counting correctly. Besides the regular Med Students, there is SMP, and then there are the GEMS, which is my program. There are only 22 of us (17 last year i believe), mostly all from minority backgrounds. The GEMS program is very similar to SMP, except it is smaller, there are some different classes, and of course it is "mainly" URMS (stress on the "mainly", as that is not entirely representive). We start classes at G'town this monday, and will be sitting in classes with you guys taking Embryology, Endocrinology, and Physiology, along with some other graduate level electives including biochem, more physio, etc....
There is about an 87% (of the 22 of us) matriculation rate into G'town IFF we pass the program, which is as strenuous as they come.

So i guess i will see you guys too!

Surfdevl02,
i think i told you this before, but i also graduated from Duke, c/o 2003.

okay well i guess i'll give an update to those who may still be on hold... just got my acceptance to the SMP program by email last night. but since i'm going to drexel/hahnemann there is atleast one more spot for you people. good luck.
