What happens to those who are deferred into a specialty, but then they don't match in the civilian match? Does anybody know what will happen then? Thanks in advance

"Let's get ready to SCRRRRRAMBLE!!!!"

That's what.

Had same question last year. This is what Dee Pfeiffer told me: If you do not match into your specialty you must scramble into a prelim spot in anything (or you will be called to active duty). You must then obtain a spot into a specialty, whether your original or not, by the following year. If you don't find a spot into a specialty leading to board certification by PGY2 you will be activated to be a GMO.
