If anyone can contribute that would be greatly appreciated.

I am starting med school in the next few weeks and am interested in getting back into the military (reservist). The problem I am encountering is that my previous service ended with an OTH (Navy reasons: Pattern of misconduct) back in 1996. I was an electronic Tech in the enlisted ranks. My reasons for wanting back in are that I deeply regret the events that took place during my previous enlistment and now that I am more mature would like to serve and live up to the obligation that I was unable to 8 years ago. I do not care about the tuition reimbursemet or any of the other benefits. Since my discharge I have matured tremendously worked in industry went back to school and will now become a physician. I feel this would show a definitive change in character but an Officer Recruiter said no way. Is there a way. Would it help if I tried first to go into the enlisted ranks then try for OCS or whatever other services may call it.

thanks

I have a friend who was discharged from the Marines, and I'm not sure if it was medical or OTH. In terms of HPSP, she was able to get a scholarship with the Navy. You might want to check with another branch of the military, calling a health professions recruiter and just asking the question. I don't know if that would work for you, but you would still be serving your country.

Good luck to you, and let us know if anything works out.

I was at the U.S. Air Force Academy for my first year of college. Due to incredible stupidity and immaturity, I was caught cheating in classes and was offered a "resignation" and honorable discharge prior to expulsion. I took it.
I never thought that I would try to go for the military again until I decided to go to medical school.

When I went to the recruiters (Navy, Air Force, and Army), they all told me that I would have a chance but that I would have to show some growth during the past 8 years. I spent a lot of my personal statement explaining myself, describing how I learned from my mistakes and moved on, and highlighting my reasons for wanting a "second chance" in the military.

Despite the recruiter's optimism, the Navy rejected me. It's now between Army and Air Force, and my application is going before the Army board this week. From all indications it's looking very favorable.

Don't listen to the recruiter. Show your enthusiasm and commitment and get your application done. Apply to all three branches and maximize your chances. And let us know how things work out!!!

My sentiments exactly. 👍

My first choice was Air Force because I'm most familiar with Air Force culture.
My second choice was Army.
By far, my third choice was Navy...
