Hello everyone! I am an aspiring dentist (17 years old) and I am quite new to the forums. I've just finished high school. This is my first post, after days of browsing around the Dental forums. I must say this online community is very helpful!

I someday hope to become a dentist. I do not, however, wish to practice in the USA. Instead, I will remain here in my home country, Guyana, and practice. I've decided that studying at an Indian Dental School would be better (for me) as opposed to studying in an American School; it is way cheaper!

I have some questions regarding my possible admission into an Indian Dental School and would love for someone to provide me with the answers 🙂

1) How hard is it to get into a dental school in India?
2) What are the general academic requirements in order to be accepted into Indian dental schools? Do I need to take certain courses before being accepted?
3) What is the cost of tuition (and if possible, living expenses)?
4) How is the student life there?
5) What this talk about NRI's?
6) What are some good schools that I may consider?
7) Any other things that I should know about?

hi im a dentist from india ...firstly u dont get a dds u get a bds degree
2) the cost would be certainly less but see if u can practise in ur own country
3) language could be a barrier where ever u decide to study ..coz once u start practising on pts in the third yr
4) you may have to get adjusted to the culture too
5) students are generally friendly and helpful

sorry to burst your bubble greatworld82, but students in india are not 'friendly and helpful'....I went to school in india...the students are highly competitive....not so much helpful....out of a class of 40, only 2 helped me out...
Black Marauder....if ur ready to handle a 'dog eat dog' atmostphere 24/7...go for it, otherwise, prepare urself.

1) how hard it depends,
2) 12 years of schooling, coursework in bio, chem and phy
3) peanuts for scholarly students in govt schools, 40000$ + in your case (mine was virtually free 😀 seriously )
4)student life depends on where you are, mine was not that exciting but i still remember it fondly. in metropolitan areas you can have a well rounded life
5)NRI means non resident indian, someone of indian origin but not residing in india. they will accomodate you in their seat if you are not an NRI
6)You can only get admission in private schools, of which there are a plenty but educational std is questionable
7)government schools are better: they have funding - cheap education, they are public hospitals as well - plenty of clinical work, won't accept international students 🙁 and politics is rampant.
There are a few good private schools and universities. I guess Manipal is one of them. Most others are just a facade to make money, without enough faculty, support system or a hospital or patients for that matter. however you can still graduate with a legit degree.

http://www.bapujidental.edu/ - is supposedly good but I wont vouch for any private school. and as to the students, i would say there are all kinds of people. sometimes you get what you ask for. I survived.

you dont always get what you asked for....i dont think anybody here asked for low scores, but they get them...so I dont think anybody would agree with you on that. neither would they agree that they asked to be treated badly....I survived also, but that doesnt mean that I asked to be treated badly by those students.

I agree with you to some extent. When I enrolled in school we were 17 and some of my colleagues just did not have enough maturity, some didnt mature till we graduated. it can be frustrating to have to deal with a high school bully or a conniving geek in such a professional branch. but i have had my share of good experiences. what you are drawing is not the representative picture that is all i want to say. I have got it without asking; and some people got it from me if they asked for it. otherwise i minded my own business and dealt only with people who were at the same wavelength.

I am strictly talking about human interactions not scores or something abstract.

Hmm, thanks. I'm pretty sure that the culture adjustment won't be too drastic. I am of indian descent [ethinically speaking], and indian culture is a big part of Guyana even today. As for the language barrier, I guess I'll have to deal with that. A friend of mine has brothers studying dentistry in India, maybe I will ask them later about their experience 🙂

Haha, I don't think I would mind at all. I will just crush 'em

Manipal is a top choice of mine too. I have complete more than 12 years of schooling 🙂 In fact I am awaiting my exam results which will be released in 10 days! Afterwards, I think I will do A levels and then work/shadow for a bit before trying to get into dental school.

Thanks everyone 🙂
