Meaning you just started MS3?

if you have any 3rd year electives that would be great. If not you can always meet with residency prog director to let them know your interest in Ophtho as early as possible (obviously come prepared with questions, they can give you advice about how competitive your app is currently and what you can do to strengthen it) or whoever coordinates med student ophtho rotations in your department to see what opportunities there are for you. Getting involved with easy research projects like case reports and retrospective studies with faculty/residents is always good if possible. Can go to grand rounds when your schedule allows.

Also since SF match for Ophtho is early, the earlier you can schedule your home ophtho elective rotation the better as you will definitely want to try to get your LORs from there.

Most med schools usually have a point-of-contact for each specialty that med students can reach out to (it's usually the PD or some other faculty member designated to deal with med students). I would certainly start there. Express interest. Ask questions. And figure out how to arrange a rotation there. You could also ask how you can get more involved in some of the on-going research projects.
