I heard that many med. schools will allow students to take a year off after they complete their MIII. This time off may be for research, overseas work, or getting their masters (in public health, health administration, etc.). My focus is on a Masters of Public Health. My future endeavor is to use my medical expertise to help out overseas where and when I can. I talked to my adviser and she suggested taking a year between MIII and MIV in order to get a MPH.

Has anyone else taken this route? If so, please lend me some information like what was the application process like, how many places did you apply, what would make me a better candidate, was it worth it, did you feel very disengaged with med. school after returning for your MIV year, etc.. I'd really appreciate any help and opinions on this subject. Thank you.

Tons of schools have combined MD/MPH programs. I think you usually get the year between MII and MIII to do your MPH work.... I could be wrong...

Des Moines University has MHA, MPH, Anatomy, and Biomedial Science Master's degrees. You can take the required classes on top of your regular load by taking online classes, and it saves you from having to take a year off.
