God Bless the Florida Schools! I know i've been talkin smack, but hey, I sold out like a little ho, and i loved it too.

I had a midMarch interview at Miami, and now I have one for USF too. Yey. Florida is still dissin me, wiping their butts with my essays and laughing at my picture, but who needs them anyway.

So let the record show, that I Sold Out on ALL PREVIOUS FLORIDA THREADS.
...i am so weak...

USF kicked me off the waitlist to clear a spot for you! If they hadn't lost my LORs, I would have been invited to interview at an earlier date. Perhaps I wouldn't have had my USA acceptance yet. If not, I would have been more on my toes. In the end, it's all their fault. :D

Good luck, Caveman! I still haven't given up hope on UF...not with 3 more interview dates left!

Sell-Out!!!

Congrats. I'm sure you'll do great on them.

that's awesome Caveman! Congrats and good luck! When exactly will you be in Miami? And did you get my last PM?

hey guys,

I'm giving up my spot for an interview at UF on March 8th, maybe you'll get the call...

Bad-Ass! Thanks, buddy! I have to ask, though...why?!?

I know I'm gonna hear it for this, but:

1-I've already been accepted at my first choice school.
2-I just moved from florida (hated it) to the west coast and I really don't want to move back to B.F.E. = Gainesville.
3- Why shell out $600 for the plane ticket.
4-From what I've seen, the match lists aren't very impressive, I think I can do as well as or better at another school.
5-I have another florida school as back-up in case I change my mind about numbers 1-4 above :D

Papa Smurf,

EVMS certainly has a chance. They are one of only a few private schools I chose to pursue after my acceptance. They'll have to find a way to make their tuition more competitive, however (IF they accept me, that is). They did ask me if I am willing to go the military route :( . I told them that I would consider it, but I would not do cartwheels if that was my only option.

The school is great, location is awesome, the people there are really cool, and I like the fact that there is no undergrad affiliation. They are there for you and their grad students alone.

I had lunch with the surgeon I want to work with, and he said I'm welcomed to spend as much of my free time with him as I want. He introduced me to his daughter, who is a 3rd or 4th yr there (can't remember). She told me that her class was 1 std dev above the mean on the USMLE! That's pretty impressive. I think the school is making a name for itself. I may, however, be able to enroll at USA and do some training under him.

USA also has an awesome history with the USMLE. I think they said that they haven't had a single failure in the last 3-4 years! That's more than UF can say, eh!?!

Anyway, too much info...right? I can't wait to find out my status at EVMS in two weeks. Maybe their letter will say, "SwampMan, we'd like to offer you a $20,000 scholarship!" That would be nice!

How are you doing in this whole process, Papa Smurf? You aren't saying much about your interviews/acceptances. That's probably a good thing! I'm worried I'll be known as "SwampMan...the dude who was always on SDN" when I get to USA (IF I go there). :D

I would like to personally thank the person who gave up their UF interview. I got a call on Wednesday offering me an interview for that date and I have a feeling it was that persons spot. It just proves that you really can help someone else out by doing things like that

Nothing from UF for me. Oh well. Who wants to go to a school where 9 people in a class of less than 100 don't pass step 1 anyway?

I'll be at UF the last interview day, 3/15. I just made it :D And to think last night I was crying because the final date is so soon.....now I'm crying of happiness :D I LOVE Florida! I HATE snow!

ok i'm getting a little ahead of myself, but I'd pay a million dollars just for a waitlist spot at UF! :D  Bring on the sun and get me out of the dreary northeast!

You can stay at my place. It's right across the street from the med school. Hey, I've seen your pics! I had to offer!

Swampy, I'm praying you get the call!!! I have my fingers crossed for you (and all the other FL SDNers too, of course!)

Good luck to everyone! And Swampy, I might have to take you up on that offer

I'll probably stay with a student host so I can get some insight into the med school, but I would definitely like to meet you! :)

Well, I'm always up for a night on the town! There are plenty of opportunities for fun here in Gainesville, and you should check them out when you are in the area.

Good luck! PM me and I'll give you a warning about one of their interviewers. Hopefully you won't get him. He's nice and all, but you need to be given a heads-up (I think). I'm about to leave work. I can send you a quick response when I get home if you PM me. Ok, I'm lazy! I don't want to do it now. :D

Ok, I'm home now. I'm sending you a PM, Foxy.

Don't get too excited about "sunny Florida". Chunks of ice (aka: HAIL!!!) were hitting my windshield on the way home! I couldn't believe it! There's a first time for everything, I guess.

Where's global warming when you need it!?!

•Who knows maybe SwampMan, Caveman, and I will also get the call.•••••That would be pretty cool! I get the feeling that all calls for the March 15 interview date were made today. It's just a gut feeling, though. I think Robyn filled that date today. :(

•BTW, SwampMan, where you living, Summit House?•••••Um...maybe. :D Don't want any psychos stalking me. Well, I've never had a stalker. That might me cool!

So who wants to pick me up at the airport?

j/k, but where do I fly into? I want to make the tickets now, and the info won't get to me for a week. Is there an airport in Gainseville? I haven't checked it out yet.

are you kidding me? Is there anything closer? How do I get from the airport to UF (w/o renting a car)? Maybe I'll fly into West Palm and drive there myself with my own car. I've done it before......Que debo hacer?

9 out of <100!? wow. that's... um. a lot

Sorry for my absence. I had to take a nap. :) I love naps!

I always fly into and out of JAX. The airport in Gainesville might be more convienent, though. I hear they are very thorough with their screening of passengers. JAX wasn't too bad in that respect.

matthew0126: Yeah, that is alot! I still would choose UF if they happen to interview and select me (which doesn't look like it's going to happen :( ).

Foxy, let me know when you'll be here and I'll make sure to stop by during lunch (you'll be meeting a BUNCH of us) to say Hi!

Congrats on the interview and Good Luck!

Oh yeah, in defense of UF's USMLE fiasco last year, let me ASSURE you that it probably won't be repeated anytime soon! They have COMPLETELY revamped our classes and made things quite a bit tougher for our class (1st years). We get an excellent education here, and I think some of the second years must have thought they could just float by on that (without extra studying before the test). Our class takes USMLE subjects exams after EVERY subject now, so I think we will be well-prepared when the real thing comes along.

damn, i hope robyn still has a few spots for us guys. if she does, it would be an interesting PLEASURE to meet all of you in person. let's hope.

Foxy, wow girl!! how'd you pull this off..you're getting madd interview invites all of a sudden. i think once the adcom members that visit this site saw your pic they said "whoah!! let's get that girl over here NOW!" :D :D

good luck over yonder.

I'm in awe!

It would be cool if we all met on the 15th. I'm not holding my breath, though. Something on my app isn't sitting well with the adcom. I wish I knew what it was!

Good luck, everyone!

if they interviewed you last year, and you improved there's no reason they shouldn't interview you this year. my story is different, so i GUESS i can understand a LITTLE. but i'm still upset.

swampman, it would be funny to hear them TRY to explain to you why you weren't interviewed when you ask. because you should definitely go ask in PERSON!! and push the envelope with the drama! let us floridians know what they said.

The surgeon I shadowed for nearly a year has an ex-wife that is also a physician at UF. I praised the guy in my app. Maybe his ex is on the adcom! Perhaps I stepped in their bad blood.

Unlikely, but possible.

I don't think I'll confront them if not offered an interview. I'll just curse them under my breath and wish nothing but pure evil on them. :D

oh come on man..i'm definitely gonna call them AND nymc if i don't get interviewed there either, because they interviewed me last year. sompin's gotta be up, we should find out what. because i have a good feeling that it was just part of the randomness of the process, and they're gonna sound awfully funny trying to make some excuse up on the spot. :(

UF doesn't have many applicants compared to other schools (they only get ~2000). Randomness is not that likely. If I had a year like med schools do, I could personally review each and every application.

If I were in charge of admissions at The SwampMan School of Medicine, this is what I would do:

1) Read the personal statement. If the applicant can't write well, I'd seriously consider sending him/her a rejection. The only thing that could save an applicant with poor communication skills would be VERY high #s (3.8+ GPA & 33+ MCAT). I figure this would do an extremely good job of trimming the applicant pool.

2) Compare #s with one's major. A 3.7 Chemistry or Math GPA is not the same as a 3.7 Microbiology or Nutrition GPA. Am I biased? Nooooooo. He he, no more than real adcoms. I'd weight the GPA by major. I'd then rank the applicants by GPA and MCAT (60% GPA & 40% MCAT).

3) If I had 200 interview positions, I'd fill 80% of them with the people at the top of my list. The remaining 20% would go to applicants with impressive extracurricular activites (regardless of placement on the ranked list).

4) The interviews would be closed file, and everyone would be held on equal footing (files are not looked at after the interview invitation is extended).

Ok, I have way too much time on my hands. :D

I think this would be a great way to select a class.

swampman, you'd make an excellent dean of admissions. BUT using the ability to write/personal statement as the most important criteria/first roadblock is a major mistake. some people can't write well. some can't sell themselves that well on paper. being a doc is about being intelligent, hardworking, and compassionate. those things are not BEST conveyed through writing. in fact, writing doesn't convey them at all...BUT they could (and so they are) be used to help determine who gets an interview (ie. compassion can be expressed somewhat through the PS, then the interview would weed out the good writers that bs'ed. OUT. sleepie time

There is ample time to prepare a quality personal statement. If someone can't or won't prepare one, I'd have to give him/her a pat on the back and say "Good luck with the other schools". Harsh? Yes, but communication in writing is VERY important. I read the work of MD/PhDs and MDs EVERY DAY (except for my days off from work :D ), and let me tell you...they can't write to save their own lives (very few can)! It's important to know what to write and when to write it (audience is key).

Maybe I will be a dean someday. That would be a fun job! "I deem YOU worthy!" Oh, the power!

No more sleep for me tonight. I took a 4 hour nap and will be studying P Chem until noon (then I'll take another nap). This class is literally making me sick. I have dry heaves for no reason. I just got over a two week illness, so I shouldn't be doing this anymore. BTW, I blame my illness on this freakin' class!

Hah-hah! If Swampman ruled the world... If you base so much on the personal statment, you'd get a class full of people who can sling the best bullsh*t! Which is fine with me because I'm good at that kind of stuff! My admissions criteria would be much simpler:
1. All beautiful ladies that applied would be instantly accepted
2. All males that I viewed as competition would be instantly rejected
3. The remaining spots would be filled by those people that bribed me with the most money and free beer
Ah, if only the world were perfect...

I finally got a student host for my UF interview on Friday, and she said some interesting info on the phone just now. She referred to this Friday as the second-to-last interview session. Maybe they will still give out more invites? I don't know if she was sure about this. She also said they have only officially accepted 20-30 people and everyone else is on hold after interview. I asked if they were interviewing less applicants this year and she said there are just fewer interview days per week, with twice the amount of interviewees there on Fridays than there used to be.

Cobragirl , if you're out there, stop by during lunch so I can meet you! I'll be wearing a navy skirt suit (my pic is in my profile).

Have a nice day everyone :)

yo. they're done sending interview invites, unless someone cancels theirs. oh dwell.

•••quote:•••Originally posted by A. Caveman:
•yo. they're done sending interview invites, unless someone cancels theirs. oh dwell.•••••Which is odd because this is the first week that there have been empty spots for interviewer's pictures on that board where they post them (not that I obsessively pass by there every day or anything...)

Hey Dra. Foxy, it's great that you're having all these interviews! Maybe it's 99.9999% you and 0.0001% SDN magic.

And Caveman, kick butt in your interviews and don't ever mention SDN to them or those UF guys might come a-lookin' at your comments, heh!
