I'm a member of Golden Key. However, I never really get involved in any of their stuff - partially for personal reasons but mostly b/c it always falls at a bad time for me.

So can I put down Golden Key in my activities section. even though I never go to events, I just got the membership?

What is Golden Key? I included the nat'l honor society for my major and I don't do anything for the chapter; I'm just a member.

It's an international honour society. If you have a certain average they send you a letter and there's a reception at the school. They pick like 100 people from my school each year - which is a huge number i know.

i don't think many people actually do anything for groups like this, but i could be wrong. i'm like punkn, member of nhs but just paid for the membership, got the neat paper saying it's true, and that's it. i intend to include it.

This is an amazing honor society that focuses on academic excellence and community service among other things.
It is open to the top 10 or is it 15 % of the junior and senior class, (check with your school.)
Unfortunately, a large number of invited students either don't respond to the invitations or once they join and pay $$, don't look for ways to get involved, or have other conflicting interests.
IMO, if you are going to pay $$ to join, you might as well get your $$'s worth by participating in chapter events and taking advantage of the numerous opportunities and benefits. I was fortunate to join one of the best and most active chapters in the country and have gotten more than my $$'s worth and definetly more than a resume filler.
Also, it doens't hurt when your interviewer is a Golden Key member and get to proudly share your accomplishments in the organization. Hint, hint...

I agree that the only reason to join would be if you get involved, but the only honors society to join just to be in and put on your CV/application is Phi Beta Kappa

you can PAY for NHS membership?

wow...

I always thought you had to earn it

I think it's you meet a GPA requirement, and then you pay to be a member, for various member costs such as I have no idea what would cost money, but food, etc.?

For GK, you have to meet the requirements and then be invited to pay to join. So you don't pay to earn, but you earn then pay.

I am of the opinion that if you are paying to be part of any organization then it really isn't worth mentioning it in AMCAS unless you are exceptionally involved in said organization.

If you can find some community service activities to do w/ da organization then that would be worthwhile to talk about.

golden key is an international honor society. its great if you get involved in it cause you are exposed to so many different people and tis an awesome organization to do community service in since there is a huge network to work with. but if you just paid just to have it, i wouldnt put it. its not as prestigious as pkb and definently seems like a resume filler. this is coming from the president of my chapter so im not trying to be condescending toward the organization

I put it down under honors, even though our golden key is actually starting to do something . . . maybe . . .
