Got a little less than a month to kill before school starts (UCLA starts late september)...

can anyone recommend any good books to read? I need something that rejuvenates my dead brain cells (dead, mainly due to studying for/taking the August MCAT).

Appreciate all the help.

later!

If you want to read something related medicine, I found "complications" by Atul Gawande very good.

"Damages" by Barry Werth. The best book about Malpractice ever. Often required reading for first year law students. Heartbreaking and enlightening.

Do a search on this topic in this forum; you'll find multiple threads with a selection of over few hundred very interesting books.

Personally, I loved two books by Dr. Ken Kamler: "Doctor on Everest" and "Surviving the Extremes". You'll enjoy them a lot!

'House of God', and 'Mount Misery' by Samuel Shem.

both are good medical-related books. Mount Misery is a sequel to House of God.

Also, 'Becoming a Doctor', by Melvin Konner is a good read.

If you're interested in books outside of medicine...I recommend Ugly Americans: The True Story of the Ivy League Cowboys Who Raided the Asian Markets for Millions. I also recommend Terror In the Mind of God by Mark Juergensmeyer and Becoming Evil by Waller...both books are about the the psychology of perpetrators of war, violence, and terrorism. If you're into more intellectual stuff...I highly recommend The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad by Fareed Zakaria.

If you want a medical related book, but one to RELAX by, I reccomend Emergency, I think by Mark Brown, (but I am not sure about the author.) The book has true stories of people who go to the emergency room. I laughed to tears reading some of them.

If you want a non related book, here are some of my favorites.
Funny
John Irving , "A World According to Garp," or "A prayer for Owen Meany"
Irving is a good writer. His books are odd, with lots of strange, interesting characters and sexual humor.
Irvine Welsh, "Trainspotting," "Filth."
Maybe you can't handle Welsh. Lots of people can't. He writes phonetically in Scottish ghetto talk. His books are about drugs, sex, and other unpleasant things. Really funny.

Serious but funny, religion, the meaning of life
Kurt Vonnegut, "The sirens of Titan"
This books best part is his explanation that if their is a higher power, he cares absolutely nothing about the luck of individuals. He didn't make you do good on your MCAT because he loves you, and he didn't make me break my arm in March because he hates me.

Action
Shane Scully "Hollywood tough"
You won't have to use your brain a bit, but it will entertain you. The guy who wrote it made TV shows for a while.

medical-ish - 'the spirit catches you...'
and i keep seeing this book 'burn' that looks great
ooh - and 'stiff' - very interesting

non-medical... im just reading 'an autobiography of a face' which is really good... its about a girl who has cancer, so i guess you could stretch it into the medical catagory, but its more about her experiences and such. v. good
