Hey guys, I'm very new to student doctor but I wanted to post a thread to ask you guys what you think my chances are of getting into dental school. I know I want to be a dentist, and I seriously don't care where I get in, I'll go anywhere, I just want to get in...I'm applying to 23 schools (I know its alot but I'm a super pessimist and i need reassurance that I'll get 1 school). Also i realize that the acceptance process is not based on scores alone, but lets say I have all the extra-curricular stuff that everyone has (volunteer, research, getting published, etc) so heres my stats

overall GPA: 3.35
science GPA: 3.295

DAT:
overall: 18
PAT: 20
Ochem:19
Gchem:19
Reading:18
Biology:18
QR: 15 =(, not enough time

Please feel free to tell me your honest opinions

To maximize your chances, you don't just apply blindly to many schools. You should narrow your field down a bit, taking into consideration your state of residence. Some schools for example don't take many out-of-staters (such as SUNY Stony Brook).

It would help if you would post your state of residence and the list of schools you are applying to.

HTH.

I live in southern California and I plan on applying to all the california schools, tufts, temple, upenn, case, nova, michigan, iowa, washington, unlv, thats all i can think of off the top of my head so far, I hope that helps

Yep, all the CA schools is a good start, so are the midwest and east coast private schools.

I doubt you will have much of a chance in Iowa though. That school reserves its out-of-state spots for regional students (Midwest states that do not have dental schools). I'd forget about Iowa and save the money.

Washington also gives preference to WA residents. I'd forget about Washington and save the money.

UNLV and UMich do take some out-of-staters so you should have a shot there.

Instead of wasting your money applying to so many schools, why don't you choose about 10 schools and apply early. Your stats are competitive and many schools do not look at QR scores with high emphasis.

You will have a better chance of getting in if you apply to less schools early than more schools late (around Oct-Nov). Don't worry, with your stats, you will get into a dental school (if not state, than it will be private).

Good LucK!

Apply to a few schools like around 10 or so. Make sure they are mostly private and your chances are good.

Hi Woodsy, YGPM.

check your mailbox it's there! 🙂

Iowa and Washington would be tuff to get into considering you're out-of-state. I would add BU and NYU to your list because you would be above-average in terms of GPA and they seem to accept a lot of students. Other than that, your list looks good and there is no need to apply to 23 schools with your stats. Good luck!

Last year Iowa accepted 19 out of state in a class of 76. I'd say chances are good with Iowa.

The caveat with Iowa's out-of-staters is that most of them are from the nearby Midwest states that do not have dental schools.

If you are from the East Coast or West Coast, your chances at Iowa are still rather slim.

Nebraska loves wisconsin applicants, the dude told me
