I just got one of my first B's, in organic chemistry lab. Im kind of pissed because the teacher was ridiculous for this course. Like she expected us to learn the entire textbook (without teaching a single thing), and none of it related to the stuff we were learning in organic lecture. This and also the final was ridiculously difficult (one of my friends said she got the third highest grade in her section with an 81), also I noticed some girls crying afterwards. Anyways I was just wondering how getting a B in this class would look in the eyes of the adcom? Is there any way to let them know about the professor without seeming like Im making excuses?

No. I'm sorry to say this but... You are screwed. You should try applying to dental school.

I think you are out of the running for medical school. Have you considered law?

dude I got a B in organic lab...along with a couple other Bs, including general chem lab, B+'s in general chem and calc 1, and a C+ in calc 2.

you'll be fine. just keep the grades that matter high (i.e. all upper division bio and chem courses...especially biochem, if you take it).

I think you definitely need to retake the class, try getting a new professor, oh and yeah I think you should reconsider and do something not involving healthcare because you have to know all the orgo rxns by heart in order to treat people!

Is it me, or if pre-meds don't receive an 'A' in the class, it's the professor's fault? Oh, my gosh, she expected you to learn the entire textbook without actually teaching it to you. Such blasphemy from that professor. The good news is that you will never have to do any of that self learning in medical school, so rest your little heart. Everything you need to know will be organized and indexed for you in lecture, and if you are lucky enough to go to a PBL school, they will just attach an IV and feed the knowledge to you intravenously. We all sympathize with your plight.

nice example of showing the maturity high-ground. I was under the impression that organic lab was one of the most reviewed courses by adcoms, since it involves both a difficult subject (organic chemistry) and is lab-based. It seems like this is the kind of course that would be most scrutinized by schools.

I'm just like you- a perfectionist. When I get a B in a class, I go nuts (I know, it's stupid). But like everyone said, it really isn't a big deal, and I'm pretty sure I'll get used to it as the classes get harder....

You know I used to laugh about this too but last block I had to draw out the pathways in the synthesis of the various amino acids. It was no fun.

Moral of the story is never say never in med school.

Oh and don't sweat the B :p I have 2 C's for organic and now I'm honoring Biochem in med school. :hardy:

no one actually answered your question though...

no, there is no way to present the unfairness of your professor without seeming to make excuses. why? because you ARE making excuses. this is life, ur gonna have to put up with people who need a neural transplant, but it doesnt matter because they are only controlling this little aspect in your life

plus, u bring this up, theyll laugh at you as soon as you say "i got a b" and wont even let you finish. rest assured that even this a** of a professor got at least one b in his lifetime. who knows? maybe it was in the class hes teaching now :p

I think there's actually something worthwhile in your post, shockingly. A lot of people advise taking orgo labs the semester AFTER the corresponding lecture, and your situation seems to be a good example of why not to take them at the same time.

As for the rest, I agree with stardom.

I personally wouldn't stress a B, but beware I posted a similar issue on here but I had a "C" in bio 2. Most of the people that posted on my thread was rude and cruel and not sincere, but there were some that were nice and sincere.

    Don't worry, You'll be fine.

It stinks to get a grade you don't feel that you deserved in a class that demands so much in-class time for so little credit. Many a pre-med, however, have gotten Bs and Cs in organic class and/or organic lab and have gone on to have successful medical school stories.

Relax! Your finals are over. Try to Rock in biochem if you take it!

Excellent use of the smileys here. We have the angry face emphasizing your displeasure with the amino acid pathways, then the light-hearted tongue face expressing the levity of your past indiscretions, then the party hat to cap off your triumph. You have taken us on a trip that only emoticons can. I weep for the beauty...

I feel like a Black Republican, money I got comin' in
Can't turn my back on the hood, I got love for them
Can't clean my act up for good, too much thug in 'em
Probably in the back of the hood, I'm like "*uck it then"

Huddlin' over the oven, we was like brothers then (What?)
Though you was nothin' other than a son of my mother's friend
We had governin', who would of thought the love would end
Like ice cold album, all good things
Neva thought we sing the same song that all hood sang
Thought it was all wood-grain, all good brain
You wouldn't bicker like the other fools talk good game
Neva imagine all the disasters that one could reign
Could bring!, should bling, the game, and I could
It's kill or be killed, how could I refrain?
And forever be in debt, that's never a good thing
To the pressure for success can put a good strain
On a friend you call best, and yes it could bring
Out the worst in every person, even the good's insane
Though we rehearsed, it's just ain't the same
When you put in the game at age sixteen
Then you mix things: like cars, jewelry, and miss things
Jealousy, ego, and pride, and this brings
It all to a head like coin, cha-ching
The rule of evil strikes again, this could sting
Now the team got beef between the Post and the Point
This puts the ring in jeopardy - indefinitely

I feel like a black militant takin' over the government
Can't turn my back on the hood, too much love for them
Can't clean my act up for good, too much thug in 'em
Probably in up back in the hood, I'm like, "*uck it then"

I'm back in the hood, they like, "Hey Nas" (Uh)
Blowin' on purp', reflectin' on they lives
Couple of fat cats, couple of A.I.'s
Dreamin' of fly $hit instead of them gray skies
Gray 5's, hate guys wishin' our reign dies
Pitch, sling pies, and n***** they sing, "why"?
Guess they ain't strong enough to handle their jail time
Weak minds, keep tryin', follow the street signs
I'm standin' on the roof of my building
I'm feelin' - the whirlwind of beef, I inhale it
Just like an acrobat ready to hurl myself though the hoops of fire
Sippin' 80 proof, bulletproof under my attire
Could it be the forces of darkness, against hood angels of good
That forms street politics - makes a sweet honest kid
Turn illegal for commerce - to get his feet out of them Converse
    That's my word

I never understood why people always made O chem to be the most important pre-med class. It is just one of many BCPM classes. I highly doubt Adcoms go down the list and scrutinize your individual classes unless they can't decide between two similarly qualified candidates. Part of going through the admissions process is owning up to past mistakes (which I don't think this is one) and being mature about it. You are always going to have different profs who teach differently, so learn what you can and move on. Oh and to restate what everyone else said, a B is not a big deal. It's your cumulative that matters. Hell, I got 3 F's, a few D's, many C's and I still got my one acceptance.:hardy:

I was just kidding...obviously I wouldn't suggest the OP had maturity issues if I called him/her a "whiny ass baby." To the OP, don't worry about it, it's a tough class...it'll be ok.

It may not be a B in orgo but whiny attitude that would preclude you from getting an acceptance--so keep working and don't make excuses.

Here's what you do: Take organic chem lab in a Canadian school twice and receive A+ both times. Averaging out, that should give you an A average. You'll be fine after that.

Maybe the OP was snark. After all these grade threads I've been tempted to start a "OMG A- IN OCHEM II!!" discussion. Of course, I refrained.

Did you ask if you could retake the lab? Do they average the new grade and the old grade or do they take the new one inleu of the old one?

To be honest, trying to excuse a B to an adcom may actually hurt you. YOU earned the B. The professor wasn't responsible. Making excuses for a grade that doesn't involve some terrible personal crisis is petty and shows a lack of maturity and self-awareness.
