Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum, but I need some advice ASAP. I have a 3.88 GPA, but this past Saturday I scored substantially lower than my practice exams and got an 18 on the DAT. I am freaking out because I already submitted my AADSAS, and my goal is to go to NYU. I called NYU - they told me I HAVE to retake because they do not even interview anyone with anything below a 20. I was shocked! I thought their average was an 18. Anyway, I guess I have to retake in November - but what are my chances for this cycle? Should I wait to schedule the DAT until October or so just to see how many interviews (if any) I have received?

ANY AND ALL ADVICE IS APPRECIATED. Thank you!

Seriously, can someone confirm this? I don't doubt that you're telling the truth, but I'm as shocked as you. Why do you want to go to NYU anyway, you want to come out $400k in debt? I think you have a good chance at other schools, don't get too stuck on one, what other schools are you applying to?

All I can say is that I have a friend already at NYU 1st Yr and she got a 18 on her DAT last year

I have a friend who received a 17 AA and was accepted to NYU. Just apply and don't freak out. Rock the application and you'll be fine.

Yeah I know a friend as well who made a 19 and got into NYU last year...so unless they drastically changed some rules this year I don't know how accurate that statement is.

I like how every single person on here has a "friend" who got into NYU with "X" DAT score.....

NYU is a popular school and a HUGE class so I bet everyone in the Pre-health field has a "friend" that got accepted into NYU dental one way or another.

As for the OP I think you have a decent shot at NYU. If you can definitely score high on the retake then it wouldn't be a bad idea if your eyes are set on other schools. But keep in mind that a retake in Nov. will put you in the late cycle (possibly 2nd or even 3rd) which means it will be much more competitive as seats are starting to fill up.

The difference between NYU and other dental schools is that you become dentist to lose money which shows your passion in dentistry.

NYU says a lot of things.....

I will admit however, that they're on the rise in terms of their stats.

However, I also know "someone" who got into NYU with a 16 RC...

This is after they "said" that they want 18 on all sections....

Go figure.

That's what I always thought - 18-ish was acceptable at NYU, especially given the other factors. And for the record - NYU is financially the best situation for me for real estate reasons, i.e. family owns without rent within a few blocks.

Thank you everyone for putting me at ease! I am still going to register for the DAT on September 1st, since I'm not eligible for a retake until Halloween/Oct. 31. I just hope that I get an NYU interview before the retake!

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE APPLYING!

I don't know who told you that, because if you look on predents.com, you'll see that last year NYU's average DAT for accepted students was below 20, which means some people below 20 got interviewed and accepted. So, you probably have some chance of getting interviews, but that chance may be somewhat slim, when you consider the competitive scores out there. Besides, when you have a GPA that high, your average DAT rises some questions about the legitmacy of your GPA (I'm not saying you're faking your GPA; I'm saying maybe the school where you earned that GPA isn't very prestigous or maybe you took many credits at CC to boost your GPA). Any how, it's probably somewhat late for a retake now. If I were you, I'd apply with these scores and see what would happen.

I would love if someone gave this answer during an interview there. That person would definitely be a shoo in for acceptance.
