Are there ways to improve upon how med schools look at my application if my undergraduate GPA is not competitive enough (under 3.0)? I've had suggestions of applying for grad schools as well as post-bacc programs, but I've also heard otherwise (that these programs will not help my application).

Have any ideas why your grades were so low? That's something you may want to ask yourself. Be honest. Do you think you're suddenly going to get a fire to do well in medical school?

Do you have any research? Superior cocurrics? If not, honestly, you do not have a good chance....but it has been known to happen. Do you know anyone of influence at a particular school? Have any good letters of rec?

There are lots of other things to consider.

I know of plenty of medical students who don't have stellar GPAs; those who don't, however, have other things to convince the medical school that they are ready and able to handle school. Many go to grad school... Normal MS or PhD programs; that way, you have other opportunities in case med school doesn't pan out. And it will strengthen your application with good (hopefully!@) grades in grad-level courses, as well as research and teaching experience.

My advice to all pre-meds out there: don't let ANYONE tell you you can't get into medical school. *ONLY* medical schools can tell you that, and even so, that's only for one particular application (you may improve it and reapply and gain admission!) Follow your dreams, and only accept defeat if you try and fail, not because others tell you you'll fail.
